Marvel's Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Enjoy the captivating companion score soundtrack composed by Brian Tyler. Truly a collector s piece.

The theme is the big thing here. This isn't a tiny theme, it's a theme worthy of the Tony Stark character and calls back to classic big themes like John Williams' Superman and Indiana Jones. We here it in its full glory in the opening track, which serves to introduce us to it. Then as the narrative begins you will notice Tyler break it down into bite-size pieces. The theme variations pop up here and there like a turtle peeking its head out of its shell. What follows is a perfectly structured action score. He has proven his ability to create modern action scores while utilizing the classic sound of an orchestra. This is what makes Brian Tyler stand out beyond the other young composers in Hollywood. He embraces the full power of the orchestra and only relies on electronics if he needs to. Iron Man 3's score packs every ounce of space on the CD as it clocks in at 1.2 hours, and not a moment is dull. The action arcs are tremendously engaging. There's no doubt that Black and Tyler worked closely together here. The structure and approach is masterful as every moment hits with a significant weight. The big thing that Tyler adds here is doubt. Something that's been missing in every Marvel film prior. We actually need to believe our hero is in danger, if there's no sense of danger then the audience checks out and just watches with a smile on their face. Tyler pumps the danger factor in as well as delicate character touches. These character moments apart from the bold theme add humanity to the music and make it emotionally real. Other textures added such as a twangy guitar, Michael Kamen's signature sleigh bells (think Die Hard/Lethal Weapon) and fantastic percussion give the score layers. The Mandarin doesn't get a big theme, but the subtle nature of his motif is perfect. Nothing about it is stereotypical or expected. It's just a perfectly simple little motif that announces his presence. When we come to the final stretch we finally hear Iron Man's theme come into full fruition and boy does it induce some goosebumps. Tyler closes the album with his 60's style "Saturday morning cartoon" style main title sequence, which is an absolute blast.
Iron Man 3 is already one of the best scores of the year. It's without a doubt the best score to a Marvel produced film and the best action score I've heard from Brian Tyler. While Ramin Djawadi's Iron Man and Patrick Doyle's Thor are excellent scores, it's Brian Tyler's Iron Man 3 that combines everything you need for a perfect action score and a hero's journey. Brian Tyler did an amazing job given the fact that he had to restructure Iron Man in 1 film. That's the one thing about it that makes me wish Brian Tyler had composed all 3 films or at least had two films to craft an arc for the character. Hans Zimmer had 3 films to craft a masterpiece of a character arc from start to finish. I'm not trying to say I wish this score was like Hans Zimmer's Batman scores, not at all. I just wish this character, which we've seen in 3 films already had Brian Tyler's music earlier. Hopefully Brian Tyler is back for more in the future because this is as close to perfect as it gets. Iron Man 3 will take you on a grand ride with plenty of character and emotional resonance. The theme is as big as it gets and it perfectly compliments Tony Stark. Definitely make it a priority to seek this one out.
The original score for Iron Man 3 is somewhere in between. I'm not quite sure it lives up to the music from the first film, but I do think it is an improvement over the second film's score. The composer is Brian Tyler, who has worked on many action movies in the past, and certainly knows how to convey action and tension through music.
The first track of the album is the most memorable; it features the heroic main theme from Iron Man 3. This theme is heard throughout the film and indeed can be heard multiple times on the soundtrack (it's a delight each and every time it pops up).
One small note: Since each of the Marvel films build off of what has come before, I like when the music does the same thing. But I can't really find a trace of the previous Iron Man scores in this one, and that's a shame. This is something that Hans Zimmer did very well with Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, adding new themes to each film but always working in previous themes as well. However, all three scores in the Iron Man trilogy have gone in different directions (this is likely a result of having three different composers).
Overall, Iron Man 3 is a solid score from a great composer. I have a few minor issues and wish the album was a bit more diverse, but the main theme is very strong and the music adequately captures the fun and excitement of the film.

In addition to this wonderful score, there is another Iron Man 3 album being released (which includes songs inspired by the movie): Iron Man 3: Heroes Fall
And if you don't yet own them, I'd recommend the previous scores:

You know from the opening track "Iron Man 3" this is going to be a blast. People with pacemakers and those on medication for high blood pressure beware - if this doesn't get the blood pumping I don't know what will. This theme is used regularly on the album in various guises, but is not overused to the point of annoyance. There are 20 tracks on the album and I won't mention them all in detail. Besides the epic opening track, other highlights for me were the slower tracks "Isolation" (Track 4) and "Extremis" (Track 7), and some of the more action based material of "Attack On 10880 Malibu Point" (Track 3), "Dive Bombers" (Track 5) and "Battle Finale" (Track 19) was just epic. Regardless of what I think, the important point is that the quality of the music across the entire album is consistently high.
Running in at just over 75 minutes, this is an above average length for a soundtrack release (and Tyler is known for being generous regarding the running time of his album releases). The sound quality and mixing is great as you would hope. The album flows well because whilst the majority of the album is more action based, it is interspersed with slower tracks. The track lengths themselves are decent (ranging from just short of 2 minutes to just over 7 minutes). This allows the music to develop over the course of the track rather than ending before it ever got going. A minor point perhaps but I think part of what makes a good album is how it is presented. A final point on this, Tyler is known for choosing to order the tracks for the best listening experience rather than the chronological order of when they appear in the film and this approach works perfectly on this release.
As always there may be music that appears in the film that is not present on the album. I haven't seen the film yet so cannot comment on this directly, although my experience with Tyler's previous albums suggests that all the best material from the film will feature on the album.
Overall, this is my favourite Iron Man soundtrack to date, and this is certainly helped by the fact that Iron Man has been given a bold and memorable theme. If you haven't got it by the end of the album, you really haven't been trying! For me, this is album ticks every box for what a summer blockbuster soundtrack should be. It oozes quality without ever taking itself too seriously and despite the fairly long running time, maintains your attention throughout. If you liked the music within the film and have any appreciation for orchestral soundtracks this is one to get. Anything less than 5*s would be a travesty and I really hope he continues with franchise in the future.
but its a fine effort. is it as good as Debney or Djawadi's score??? id say it fell somewhere imbetween and maybe this leans harder on being a full on trailer music album than a score, but it captures the feel of the movie, it drives the movie at a hot pace and this is what the story required. their was rarely a dull moment in Iron Man 3. its more subdued scenes are few and far between so in all fairness, the aggressive dominant full on horn section, multi layered extra large percussion works here.
It is a VERY commercial modern score. it plays hard on all the previous ground work Zimmer has laid down for 20 years of that there is no denying.
Absolutely fantastic for commuting, walking, running relaxing and also working on your computer.
