When I first heard that we were getting a Nine Minutes spin-off book I was sooooo happy and excited! I wasn't sure what to expect with Anthony and Christy's story since we didn't read a lot about them in the series, but let me tell you that it didn't disappoint. I was sucked in from beginning to end and couldn't put it down. I didn't want it to end ever!!!
I won't go into the plot, but I will say that the author got me good with all the plot twists. Beth Flynn is an amazing storyteller and she writes characters that you can't help but love even with all of their flaws. Anthony was loyal, fierce, a bad@ss alpha and his love for Christy had me loving him so hard. I'm not joking when I say that I want a book for each and every character in this awesome fictional world. And did I mention that one of my favorite heroes ever makes several appearances?! ;) I can't express how much I loved this book and how I will be obsessing over Beth's next book!!
Anthony Bear and Christy are characters that were introduced in Beth's Nine Minutes trilogy. If you haven't read that series yet, you do not need to in order to read this book. Beth does an incredible job of incorporating the scenes with Bear and Christy from the trilogy into this book. Either way, I think there are going to be certain reactions from readers who have read the trilogy first, and another set of reactions from those who haven't.
When I started this book, I had preconceived notions of Bear and Christy based on the scenes they had in the trilogy. From the little bit of background Beth provided, I had created a whole scenario in my head of who they were, what had occurred in their world that got them to the point they were at, and how their lives had played out by the end of the trilogy. And let me tell you, I couldn't have been further from the truth. That is the genius of Beth Flynn. She crafts a story that makes you think you need to travel down THIS fork in the road, when all the while, you should have been travelling down the other path. And once you've read the story and get to the end, you just sit there and shake your head with bewilderment at how she did that.
For those that haven't read the Nine Minutes trilogy yet, the reaction I'm expecting to get from them is: why haven't I already read Grizz and Kit's books?? Beth intertwines pivotal scenes into Bear and Christy's story that will pique your interest in their lives and have you scrambling to start on their journey as soon as you can. At least I think so. I know that if I hadn't already read Grizz and Kit's books, I would have been one-clicking them before I ever got to the last page of The Iron Tiara.
Beth impresses the heck out of me with the way she lays out her stories. Both Anthony and Christy have a plethora of secrets between them, and instead of just telling them to each other, which I think would stunt the story, Beth weaves a background that slowly unfolds the secrets in due time so that when they are finally revealed, the impact they have on the reader is stronger and deeper and keeps you thinking about them long after you've moved past that chapter.
Anthony and Christy's story is deeply emotional for a multitude of reasons. It isn't always pretty, and there were times my heart stretched farther than was comfortable, but Beth has a unique way of gently fitting it back into my chest a little bigger than it was and beating a little faster than before.
Of course I am a greedy reader and want more of Bear and Christy's story!! I can't wait to see what Beth has in store for us next!
Before I go any farther I want to emphasize to the readers... do not go into to this book looking for more insight into Grizz. This is not his book or his story! His story has been told, his life has been exposed, he's bled for the readers on the pages. Grizz didn't get to where he was alone, he had a few friends who helped him along the way and he trusted completely. The one who always had his back without question was Anthony Bear. Anthony Bear is just as enigmatic as Grizz. His story is just as compelling. Grizz and Ginny will only make cameo appearances as supporting characters. It's time for Anthony and Christy to tell their story.
It all begins with Anthony Bear as a twelve year old child on the Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma. Readers get an insight of his heritage and what his life was like as a half breed on the reservation. Being the nephew of the Chief doesn't give him prestige or validation, he still has to prove himself as a person of integrity and value. He's learned the value of ethics and honesty from his uncle but has also learned corruption and dishonesty from his father. When faced with choices that test his honor as an individual it sets him on a new path that leads him to South Florida and the beginnings of a life of crime.
By the mid 1970's Anthony has established his ruthless reign of crime on the west coast of Florida. No one crosses his line and lives to tell about it. When a client reneges on a loan, he takes revenge and extracts whats due.
Van Chapman ran out on a loan and Anthony is going to get his due. When an opportunity falls in his lap, he takes it. He kidnaps Van Chapman's only daughter, Christy Chapman, to hold for ransom. It doesn't take long to realize that Van Chapman could care less and the only thing being held for ransom is his heart. Christy Chapman isn't the white socialite he thought her to be. She's more than an heiress, she is the queen of his iron heart.
As most readers know... Beth Flynn delivers a complex, detailed story that spans decades. She allows her readers to experience her characters lives throughout the years rather than just the moments where they fall hopelessly in love. She allows the readers to experience their joy, their triumphs in life as well as their mistakes, pain, and tribulations that test their very souls. She gives them life on the pages as well as in the readers hearts!
I am thankful to experience Anthony Bear's beautiful, ugly life. He is a man of honor and integrity as well as a ruthless criminal. He is a hero in his own right!
