Pertinent info: I'm a 5' 1", 150 lb. 65 year old woman with no other back/neck problems of which I'm aware.
I can't begin to tell you the pain I was in from a pinched nerve in my neck. For a week, I couldn't stand up for more than five minutes without my neck starting to burn and feel like someone was stabbing me. Bad enough that sometimes I really, really wanted to scream. I had to lie down on a small neck bolster with a heating pad on high to stop the pain, which took up to half a hour. Then I was stuck on my back until I was willing to endure the pain again. This was the seventh or eighth episode of this neck pain in the past couple of years, each episode worst than the last as to length and degree of pain. I missed seven days of work this time.
The success of the bolster/heat treatment is what led me to a self-diagnosis of a pinched nerve. You should see your doctor for diagnosis.
I first tried aTENS unit, which was a miserable failure for my particular condition. (I'm returning it to Amazon.) I ordered this inversion table and had friends assemble it for me since I absolutely couldn't do it. (Not nearly as simple as it looks like it should be.) I spent several hours up and down from bed making small adjustments to the unit until I had it right for me. (Tip, although I'm 5'1", the correct height setting for me on the boom arm turned out to be 5'7". I have the strap configured to allow the table to tilt no more than 35 to 40 degrees off the horizontal plane. This is FAR from completely inverted, which would be 90 degrees. However, when on the table, it feels like I'm close to upside-down.)
Once I had it adjusted to my satisfaction, I suspended myself for ten minutes, then waited to see how long it would take the pain to return while standing. 45 minutes! For someone who hadn't been able to eat anything in an upright position for a week, this was a miracle, and such a relief. Went back to bed for a couple of hours, then got back on the table again for 15 minutes. (I recommend sticking with a maximum of ten minutes as it states in the instructions.) I repeated this a couple of times in the next hour or so, sticking to ten minutes. Then I waited for the pain again. I went to bed for the night around three hours later with no pain. I woke up, got out of bed to see how long it would take the pain to hit again. When eight hours had passed and I was still pain free, I went ahead and used the table a couple of times during the remainder of the day as recommended in the instructions. That was yesterday and I'm still pain free and fixing to use the table for the first time today.
I plan on following the ten minutes, twice a day routine forever. I've read that inversion can reverse some of the damage gravity does to the internal organs over the years, compressing them and forcing them down out of their original positions. I'm hoping this will also help keep my heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, etc., from deteriorating.
I didn't buy this model for the heat function, but turns out it works just fine, at least on the first try. I'll probably not use it often, maybe in the winter to pamper myself sometimes. I'm pretty hot natured and additional heat isn't always comfortable for me. If the heat breaks, the table stays!
I'm impressed with the solid construction, the comfort of the ankle holders and the simplicity of the design. I would prefer more padding on the table, but that would probably interfere with the heat function. Attaching a piece of memory foam to the table somehow would probably work great if you don't care about the heat.
I must say that lifting my body forward to step down off the table is a little straining on my back, and someone with existing back issues might want someone else present to act as a "spotter " to aid in that, as well as to help with setting and releasing the ankle holders. You have to bend over at the waist to do that. To lean forward, I find it helps to bend my knees a little, which helps my hips act as a fulcrum. That makes it easier to lean forward to unlock the ankle holders and step off the table.
Please be aware that you may be slightly light headed when you return the table to it's upright position. Allow a few seconds for your head and inner ears to right themselves before you bend over to release the ankle holders. One final tip: If you have the slightest upset stomach, DON'T USE THE TABLE. Your stomach is likely to empty itself without warning - mine did. Probably best not to use the table on a full stomach, either. Gravity is a powerful force to move stomach contents the wrong direction, and the slight dizziness when returning to the upright position will exacerbate the problem.
I hope this review helps you make your purchasing decision.
The table arrived on Friday, I ordered it sunday night with Prime shipping, but it apparently takes it a few days to leave the warehouse. I was pleasantly surprised to find it on Friday morning, since the shipping estimate said not to expect it until the following Thursday.
Now on to what everyone really cares about. My husband and I had never used an inversion table before, but I have been studying fairly nonstop, and I needed a way to stretch out all of my kinked up muscles without it feeling like more work. This inversion table does that job perfectly! My husband set it up in about an hour by himself, his only request was that I not bug him until he was done. The moment of truth arrived, and he called to me, and he was happily rocking slightly inverted. In his words, "it's just like a seesaw, but for bigger kids".
For points of reference, my husband is 5'10" and about 230lbs, I think, and he is supported comfortably on it.
I am 5'4, and about 135", I am able to use this item with bare feet, and to comfortably hang for a few minutes. I have to set it to 5'5" so that I can come up easily, but it works wonderfully. I love the cushioned handlebars, my husband wishes that it had armrests because he likes lying on it at the slanted position.
I specifically wanted this table because of the higher weight limit, we have a daredevil little toddler, and I wanted to make sure it would be safe for her to sit on one of us while we were on it. She loves it, I do not necessarily say this is a safe use of the table, but my husband will "spot" us so that he stops the table from tilting all the way while she is sitting with me, but she treats is exactly like a teeter totter, and we all feel safe with it like that. This is not something I would do without my husband right there, for any potential accidents, and I think she will not be as into it once she gets used to it being in the house.
The only bad thing I have to say about it is that we have not been able to get the heated cushion part to work, my husband already threw out the directions, but for now we love it even without that feature, so if we can figure out how to make it work that would be a bonus.
-Foot rests are cushy enough to work without wearing shoes
-Can balance just by leaning back with your arms up, and then putting arms down puts you back into a horizontal position, initiating a sitting position, or just shifting your weight forward puts you back upright.
-We all feel very secure on it
-Love the safety loop feature
-Cannot figure out how to make the heated cushion work, but we haven't tried too hard yet either.
My toddler fixed the heated cushion problem. There is a plastic covering on the remote control, she ripped it off, and voila the heat worked once I plugged the table up. It was quite nice during the cold winter.
We use it less than we did at first, but it is still great to have for when all that tension totally builds up. It works very well as a massage table too one you put the safety loop in position. I found adjusting it about 2-3 inches taller than I am made it work better for me.
