I enjoyed this book. The pacing was good - the two women slowly got to know each other. The writing was easy-to-read. The characters were likable. Diana and Emily have their own secrets and insecurities, but you root for the two complex women as they open up and get to know each other. Obstacles that they must overcome include: a journalist who is digging into Diana's past, the conservative hospital administration, and an unexpected encounter with an ex-girlfriend. Overall, a cute, quick read. I look forward to more from this author.
I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Hmm.. I would say this is perhaps a medium slow burn. It isn't as slow as others I have read, but it definitely needs to go in that category. Dr. Emily Barnes definitely comes across as an ice-queen as far as first impressions go, in my opinion. She is the attending doctor at the hospital Diana finds herself working at after a nine year absence from medicine. Diana sends her perfect little controlled world spiraling when Emily realizes she has seen this woman before. Could it really be... her? Emily doesn't like losing control but when feelings continue to manifest, is she willing to give that up to live life the way she wishes and not care what others think?
Diana was hired by Dr. Wallace with the clause that if she were to bring about any negative publicity to the department she would be fired, end of discussion. With her past as a drummer of a band, she understood the reasons and hoped her past would stay where it was, in the past. She was back doing what she really wanted to do, be in the medical field again, and she wanted nothing to destroy that. If word got out of her past, would she ever really be taken serious again?
If you want angst, it is definitely there, with sparks flying in-between. There's frustration, heartbreak, anger, laughter, romance... and a whole lot of drama.
I loved these two ladies, but if I had to pick one, I would pick Emily as my favorite. Because, I'm sorry, but every time she blushed was completely adorable, or when she faltered in her attempts to keep her distance from Diana and her world on that controlled environment she created for herself.
I will stop my rambling for now. My final thoughts... It is a wonderful debut from Chris Zett and I look forward to future projects from this author.
