Why does God bless some churches and not others? That is a question that Wayne Cordeiro seeks to answer in his book on a church that does not live by image but as he explains, "An irresistible church lives heart first. It means working and serving God with true passion and living with an intrinsic desire to travel the pathways down which God leads and invites us to follow" (155).

This is the kind of church the author describes under twelve traits which I paraphrase as follows:

1. A hunger for God and his presence.
2. An identity that the church lives by.
3. A heart-first priority in all that is done.
4. True constant gratefulness.
5. Love manifested in care for one another but also a willingness to confront if necessary.
6. A willingness to learn and grow.
7. Believers who faithfully feed themselves rather than be spoon fed.
8. A passion for seeking the lost and building up the saints.
9. A love for the community in which the church finds itself.
10. A risk-taking faith.
11. Humility that recognizes that all comes from God.
12. Planning that keeps a vision before the church.

There is an amazing balance between the sovereignty of God and our responsibility to obey him. This will need to be worked out by believers and the churches they are a part of. Jesus said that the wind (the Spirit of God) blows where it wishes (John 3:8) but also that we are responsible to obey (John 14:21). May each one of us experience an irresistible church where God blesses.

One trait that needs to be added would be the trait of doctrinal faithfulness according to the judgment of Jesus upon the local church. This often means suffering and that is a trait of a church that God blesses according to Revelation 3:8-11.

May God multiply churches on this earth that are both irresistible and faithful--and all for his greater glory.
