We have passionate lovemaking, near the end of the story. That was alright by me because their romance build slowly and they didn't jump right into the sack before they even knew their names.
We certainly have suspense, twists, amazing secondary character's too. We get a glimpse into the future by only a few months, but I love when author's do that.
We get HEA, and the story of our H/h is completed so no cliffhanger, but if you want to know what happens to her cousin, you will have to get the next book in the series. That is something I rarely do to, is spend $2,99 for a book. I wait til they are on sale because I read so much that to spend $2.99 is high for me. But that again should tell you how much I enjoyed this author. I know this book is currently at the same price, but I got it cheaper when it first came out. So glad I did because now I have a new author to follow.
I am not going into the premise of the story, but it is well worth the price, for what you receive. Not going into the premise of the story as others have explained it. (ljb)
LOVED this story and it was well written keeping your attention throughout. What a heart-stopping thought to have a man come up from behind you when you never heard him approach, hold you close, and whisper into your ear. I highly recommend this book. Plenty of action and adventure to keep you pinned to the pages. Great read!
Lady Evelyn is a heroine with backbone, yet also believable for her time period. Her greatest fear is internal and a product of that time period, yet one many modern women also struggle to overcome. She doesn't wait to be 'saved', she actively works to save herself. There are many 'seeds' planted in the story, which seem to simply be period or character detail. These seeds then grow to be major points in the story and plot. Read with a careful eye!
I wasn't certain about the hero at first, but wow! He slams like a force of nature and doesn't let go. While his duty is protection, he also sees deep into Evelyn and gives her exactly what she needs when she needs it, even forestalling his own plans. He's a true 'hero' in every sense of the word.
The villain is vile, disgusting and bent on getting his own way-- yet he's no 'cardboard evil bad guy'. His actions follow character, even the time period and the plot. He's not bad because the story needs a bad guy, he's truly set on getting his own way whatever the cost. He also could be your next door neighbor, so watch out for the 'quiet' ones.
Since I don't give spoilers, this description of plot might seem thin, but the story has more twists and turns than a back country mountain road. All the twists and turns are believable, not done simply by 'author creation' and stay completely in nature with each character. The villain was someone didn't see coming and there's a major plot twist at the end that leaves the reader breathless and gasping and unable to stop reading. I became lost in this world; read it in one sitting and gave up dinner to find out what happened! I also enjoyed the way I connected with the characters; a reader can identify with heroine, the hero and even the villain at one point in a believable way that makes complete sense. The secondary characters are anything but; they enhance and also stand on their own as full parts of the story.
I will say read this with a box of tissues handy: there's some emotional parts and dialogue that truly touch. Also have a bucket of ice: the sexual tension between the hero and heroine (and a couple of secondary characters) will leave you in flames. The violence isn't overly graphic, nor are the love scenes; descriptive and 'left to the imagination' so the reader can 'see' exactly what's going on without being 'beat over the head' with it.
I very much loved this story and can't wait to read more from this author!
“An Irresistible Shadow” sated all my needs and met my expectations in this regard. It’s the first historical I’ve read in a while, it won’t be the last. Ms. Blacketer has reenergized my love for this genre with her keen eye to detail, the depth and passion of her characters, the substantial plot and the simmering chemistry between Evelyn (feisty!) and Gabriel, her Shadow Guardian. And the Lady Nerd in me loved the background setting conflict with England and Scotland.
We need more heroines like Evelyn, more smexy menfolk like Gabriel and another few books from the talented, original Kirsten Blacketer.
