About six years I bought a very similar device to the item under discussion. It was and is a durable object containing (top to bottom) a cutting edge, a small-wire cuttter, a small-screwhead cutter, and a stripper/crimper arrayed around a central bolt. On a lark I bought the object at hand -- the Irwin Industrial 8-inch Multi Tool Stripper, Cutter and Crimper, and first learned that its functions are almost identical to the old job -- at top there's a pliers, not blade, then the functions come in the order of the product's name (stripper-cutter-crimper), top to bottom, also arrayed around a central pivot like a shears, and with comfortable handles. - I miss the upper cutting blade from the older model but having a tool that functions as a basic pliers to boot makes it more versatile. When you can still get an item like this for the mid-teens of $$$ and under, you're doing okay.

Why would you need it? If you are doing light crimping, as electronics. If you've got a small screw needs cutting, for a job that's way too small for bolt clippers. Especially if you want to cut OR strip light-gauge wire. I agree with the prior reviwers who said that the cutting/crimping is not the best when we get above 20 on the American Wire Gauge (AWG). This standard increases its numbers as the wires get smaller, so nos. 22, 24 and so on are very thin -- it's not a matter of stength, it's a matter of finesse.

Irwin tools are now owned by Vise-Grip, whose corporate name is proudly displayed on the soft handles. This unit was manufactured in Taiwan. Most of Vise-Grip's home tools now seem to be of non-USA origin (sigh!). I should note that the Irwin Multi does not, however, have a Vise-Grip's lockable squeeze handles.Read more ›

There's an old saying about having 'the right tools for the job.' The statement could not be any more correct. After years of trying to strip wires using: tools with a built in wire stripper as a second thought, scissors, razor blades and knives, this tool was like the holy grail. (I remember burning my fingers in college using a lighter, to melt the insulation off.) The stripping blades are super sharp, angle cut. With a little practice, you'll look like a pro in no time. I flew through the project of connecting my new car stereo. The strippers also have a very sharp cutter, crimping mechanism and small pliers on the tip. I combined this tool with some crimp caps (available very cheap) to make splicing wires, a snap. My car stereo install was not only quick and easy, but looks 100% professional. I was so pleased that I went back and redid several wiring jobs I had done years ago on other areas of my car. It took me no time to fix several of these projects. No more nasty, sticky electrical tape wrapped around wires with questionable connectivity. No more cutting my fingers or ruining wire, trying to strip it incorrectly. No more ugly heat shrink tubing.

These strippers are very solidly built. The metal is durable and will last many, many years. I highly recommend getting the more compact 7" tool, as most projects will require you to work in smaller, cramped spaces. It has a great locking mechanism, so you can even put them in a pocket, without risking injury or damaging your clothing. The tool also comes nicely oiled. The handles are rubberized and easy and comfortable to grip. I cannot wait to use these on more projects at home and at work. This is an invaluable tool for anyone doing any capacity of wiring.

Cons:
- I personally like wire strippers that are spring loaded; I just haven't found any that are as versatile that have this feature.
- Strip gauge on the tool only gives the gauge for solid strand, not multi. This is a really nitpicky comment, and if you don't know what I'm talking about, then you won't notice or care.

These are excellent wire cutters. They have a soft, comfortable grip and do just what wire cutters should do: cut wires. The description says they are 10-24 AWG, but according the the box, they're actually 10-20 AWG (you can tell from the picture too). They are not insulated, so you shouldn't cut live wires with these, but that's not a big deal most of the time. Overall, a good tool.

I really like these cutter/strip/crimpers. They seem like good build quality, no over-laping when cutting or crimping they cut & strip great. crimpers work good i am just used to my last pair that had the crimpers @ the end, it is a personal preference i have & i know many don't like crimps @ the end but if i am trying to crimp in a tight spot it can be hard to get these in there! That is why i gave 4 stars not 5! Definite buy again!

I purchased this with the only reason being I had to cut a few screws shorter than they were because I made a custom coat rack using cabinet pulls. It had come out nice until I realized the screws on the back would be pushing into the wall. Oops, major oversight. So I was googling about how people do this all the time if the screws stick out so far and found out that yes, you can shorten them and it's actually very easy. All you need is one of these tools. They have screw cutters built in, in various sizes, that let you slice through wickedly thick screws with barely any effort at all. I was shocked how well it worked.
Of course yes it strips wires and cuts them and does a bunch of other stuff that I have no idea what it's for or how to use it. But for the simple reason of cutting screws, this was a cheap, awesome way to get it done fast with no mess. No metal shavings from sawing through them, just pop and the end of the screw is off. And it makes sure that it leaves it threaded and not pinched so you can still thread a nut onto it as well.
Genius product, at an awesome price. Highly recommend.
