This is the third book that I've read by Larson ( The Devil In The White City; In The Garden Of Beasts ) and was quite pleased to find that it lived up to the quality of the other two.
Take your favorite bed and breakfast and imagine a 15 foot wall of water slamming into it with 125 mile per hour winds. Easily 50 000 + pounds of force on buildings built for a small fraction of that.
Thus, I'd recommend this book as a good read of the history of a specific event that may not pertain to much else, but is still amazing to learn about.
I never knew about this hurricane and it destructive effect it had on Galveston. Predictions of hurricanes were only in the earliest stages. There were no names for hurricanes in 1900. Very little was known about them. The hurricane described in this book is probably the worst hurricane ever to hit our country.
This book is also the story of Isaac. He was one of the first people to study weather forecasting. His story runs throughout the book.
I recommend this book.
