Broadly, the book tells the story of a young man who "escapes" (Phelan''s word) the priesthood, marries and returns from the US to his Irish home town. His brother, who remained with their parents views him with disdain. An old friend of the "escaped" priest, who is a priest in the town, is deeply conflicted in his own priestly role and challenged by the narrative of his no, longer, priestly friend.
In addition, hints of a 30 year old murder of a young woman and the death of an innocent man suspected of her murder, threads through most of the book with hints of the identity of the true murderer. This feature of the broader opus would stand alone as a mystery thriller.
In short this is a riveting, multi faceted narrative painted in the deep colors of the multi faceted human psyche.
ISCARIOT tells the story of a former priest and expatriate who returns to Ireland to come to grips with the past. Phelan, a former priest himself, is a poetic and gifted writer who has a rare insight into institutional Catholicism, the Irish psyche, and the Church in Ireland and in America.
