HPB's first major work, originally published in 1877. The most astounding compendium of occult facts and theories in Theosophical literature. It proclaims the existence of mystery schools under the guardianship of men who are servants for truth. It outlines a movement by the Guardians of the Ancient Wisdom to preserve and protect the ageless truths, until in later times they would again become known for the spiritual benefit of all.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

An analysis of religious beliefs in general, this volume is in particular directed against theological Christianity, the chief opponent of free thought. It contains not one word against the pure teachings of Jesus but unsparingly denounces their debasement into pernicious ecclesiastical systems that are ruinous to man's faith in his immortality, and his God, and subversive of all moral restraint.

About the Author

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was born on August 12, 1831, at Dnepropetrovsk (Ekaterinoslav), Ukraine, daughter of Colonel Peter Alexeyevich von Hahn and novelist Helena Andreyevna (née de Fadeyev). In 1849 she married N. V. Blavatsky, and shortly thereafter began more than 20 years of extensive travel, which brought her into contact with mystic traditions the world over. She was the principal founder of the Theosophical Society in New York City in 1875, and devoted her extraordinary literary talents to its humanitarian and educational purposes until her death in London, England, on May 8, 1891. Along with writing her several books, H. P. Blavatsky kept up a voluminous correspondence and also contributed a steady stream of essays and articles to periodicals in English, French, and Russian.

I read reviews about some of the cheaper options that complained about the formatting and how it was very difficult to read. I sprung for this option and am very pleased with the formatting/print.

I have just started reading it, but I have to say that this book(s) is full of esoteric, eastern, scientific... all kinds of knowledge, you won't be unsatisfied with all the things you can learn in this book, the quotes alone are rich in wisdom. As to how she was able to amass all the content through the book, I have no idea but I can say that either this woman is some kind of sage or someone 2000 years old or more help her with this book. If you ever read Manly P. Hall's Secret Teachings of All Ages and were fulfilled with it, prepare to explode with what this book will give you

[Please note: After two attempts, Amazon, the largest online dealer on the planet, was unable to deliver to me an undamaged copy of this item. In both cases there was almost no padding to protect the books and slipcase. What padding was there was torn and flattened, resulting in the lovely slipcase being extremely damaged. After extensive talks with two service reps and a supervisor, I was told they were emailing the warehouse about the matter and a 3rd copy would be sent. But no. Instead I received a refund. Amazon's careless handling of reviews for this item is also unacceptable. Best of luck finding a good copy. I continue my search elsewhere.]

The edition pictured on this page is by Quest Books, part of its' excellent series of H. P. Blavatsky Collected Writings. The Quest edition has unique and excellent references, notes, documentation, and added relevant information by Boris De Zirkoff (a grand-nephew of Madame Blavatsky), as does the rest of the Collected Writings series. As my review title suggests, I have no idea how many - if any - of the reviews on this page relate to this actual Quest edition, and this is something Amazon really needs to remedy, as the ten reviews I found not pertaining to the Quest edition are all one-, two-, and 3-star reviews, giving an incorrect impression of the quality of the edition pictured.

There are also excellent facsimile verbatim editions by the Theosophical University Press (in 2 volumes, hard back - ISBN-10: 0911500022, softback - ISBN-13: 9780911500035), and by the Theosophy Company (2 volumes bound in one book, ISBN-10: 0938998013). Some readers find these fine editions difficult due to lack of annotation, but others prefer these and find the annotations by Mr. De Zirkoff to be distracting. The information in the Quest Books edition by Mr. De Zirkoff is very helpful for me, and I'm sure the same is true for other readers.

Before I began the full-length "Isis Unveiled", I read Isis Unveiled: Secrets of the Ancient Wisdom Tradition, Madame Blavatsky's First Work, also from Quest. I found it to be a good way to help acquaint myself with the core of the much larger full length work. I should add that some readers of H. P. Blavatsky are strongly opposed to any abridged editions of her work, and I understand that view. There is a great advantage to having the entire "Isis Unveiled" in one's hands, to be able to peruse the many topics and pages in Blavatsky's exact words. It would be a shame if a reader saw only the abridged version and judged the work by only that edition. For myself and other readers, the abridged version only whets the appetite for the full work.

Unfortunately, there are now many, many incomplete and poorly assembled versions of "Isis Unveiled" - please steer clear of those! Here are the editions that are faithful to Blavatsky's original work:

Isis Unveiled: (Two Volumes in a Slipcase) - the edition with notes and background by Boris De Zirkoff, pictured on this page,

The Theosophical University Press editions: hardback - ISBN-10: 0911500022, softback - ISBN-13: 9780911500035

The Theosophy Company edition: ISBN-10: 0938998013

Isis Unveiled: Secrets of the Ancient Wisdom Tradition, Madame Blavatsky's First Work - the (very much) abridged edition.

"Isis Unveiled" is not the easiest read of Blavatsky's writings, and she herself was not entirely happy with it. It was written in 1877 in English, by a Russian woman, dealing with esoteric subject matter. The writing style then differs from today's, but I found that continued reading familiarized me with Blavatsky's style, and now I enjoy reading her work. Blavatsky herself suggested that the best introduction to her work is The Key to Theosophy, facimile version with glossary. There is also an abridged version, The Key to Theosophy (Quest Book). As with "Isis Unveiled", "Key..." is also in the public domain, and many incomplete, low quality editions flood the market. It's best to buy from the three above-mentioned publishers to get complete, quality editions of any H. P. Blavatsky book. All three are associated with theosophical groups, and all have been publishing Blavatsky's work for several decades.

Thank you for reading this review; best wishes to you.

I recommend this edition of "Isis Unveiled" as it has detailed endnotes from the editor that situate key textual references within their nineteenth century context. This edition also has an important historical introduction by its editor Boris de Zirkoff. That being said, it is important to note that these two volumes, purported to be dictated or inspired by disincarnate and incarnate personalities, contain a stunning wealth of historical, mythical, philosophical, and semi-scientific material. Blavatsky wrote the text to resurrect what she called the "Ancient Wisdom" during a period of scientific materialism on the one side and spiritualism, with its claims about the life of the dead, on the other. She wished to situate her theosophical perspective within an older Platonic tradition that would give due place to matter (an inferior but quite real position) and yet to the power of spirit to shape and transform matter. Her fight with Darwin did not entail a simple rejection, but rather left the field of physical evolution to him (and Wallace), while making room for a prior (temporally and ontologically) involution in which spirit encased itself more and more in matter. In her view, we have reached the deepest level of involution and are now on the cusp of a return back toward the light of spirit from which we have come. She posited an emanationist Platonic cosmology but one that tried, not always successfully, to honor the science of the nineteenth century. Yet she was also a master polemecist and took on the Christian theology of her time, with special hatred reserved for the missionaries working in India. Unlike the later Jung and Joseph Campbell, she did not see her Platonic archetypal patterns as occuring spontaneously in different cultural basins, but struggled to show (unconvincingly) that all culture derives from India, via Egypt and Greece, and that nothing in the Christian bible could not be found in better and purer form in Indian thought. In particular, she rejects traditional Christian teachings concerning the devil (whom she does not take too seriously as a personal being), the atonement, the uniqueness of Jesus, and the obsession with conversion. However, she posits a primitive and pure Christism of the true gnostic Jesus against the Christian empire which spent much of its time vilifying her work. Her dating of texts is certainly off the mark by the standards of today's scholarship, yet her attempts at finding parallels among religions has now become common coin. This monumental text can vex the reader many times, as Blavatsky makes absurd non-empirical claims, however, her primary philosophical intuitions are clearly on the mark for those among us who find Platonism and Neo-Platonism compelling perspectives.
