Covering Muslim history from the death of the Prophet Muhammad to World War I, this work in two volumes has the distinction of being a book onhistory as well as a book on the philosophy of history. More than merely a chronicle of events of the Muslim world, it is a book which provides insights into the causes of victories and defeats of dynasties, as well as successes and failures of movements in Islamic history. Here is a work that sets all this history within the bigger picture, reminding us of other stalwarts who likewise made remarkable contributions in this field - Ibn Khaldun and Toynbee.

This one is a must read for those who are interested in islamic as well as global history-various perspectives, influences and patterns of its development.Author's way of outlining a philosophy of islamic history is interesting. It conveys an outlook on how muslim societies has evolved and enriched the very idea of tawhid in its historical journey. This very important idea of historicity in its positive note(unlike those who reject much of the later islamic history) and making sense of ones own history(unlike those who just take history as collection of exotic stories) is what made me hooked to this fascinating book.

Its quite unfortunate that this one doesn't receive popularity like 'destiny disrupted'(Tamim Ansary),even being much more entertaining and insightful..

A unique work that goes beyond the Middle East and presents a global view of the events that have shaped Islamic history.
