I really like how this book is wrote, how it describes things. Like: "He was small for one who lived so many suns and moons." Instead of saying he is small for his age. This book is about a girl living on an island with her village. She is happy until the Aleuts came. They had came to hunt sea otters, and said to give half of the profit to her village, but they tried to sneak away so they don't have to share. They had a fight, lots of men are killed. The village is miserable. So the new chief went to a county across the sea and said he will make a place for them to stay. But when the ship came to take them to the new land, one girl didn't catch the ship. She is left alone. She worked hard hard to survive, and she did lots of things she never had done before. Years passed, in the end the ship came. It is a good book, and some of it is true! Some of the things in the book had really happened. I like this book a lot.

My 10 year old and I really enjoyed this book.
There is some really sad parts, but age appropriate for a 4th grader.

Every kid should read of "Karana" (whose true name we'll never know), and this fictional story of her niece's desire to find her aunt on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. There's a lot of information in this story about what befell the native Americans when the Europeans came.

I discovered this book in my school library in the mid-1970s, and devoured it and then re-read it multiple times. Karana was a hero of mine, with her survival instincts, and the story has stayed in the back of my mind for 40 years.

As my children got old enough to read chapter books, I was pleased to see this classic on the list of books they could select for school assignments. I still had my old copy of Island of the Blue Dolphins and gave it to our oldest daughter. I just bought a new one for our youngest son, who is also enjoying the story.

Karana's story is based loosely on the story of Juana Maria, a native girl who lived alone for 18 years on an island off the coast of California in the mid-1800s. This is a story that most children will enjoy and relate to, as Karana battles loneliness and shares her life with a wild dog. She makes herself skirts out of cormorant feathers, builds a house out of whale bones, weaves baskets and lives on fish and seal blubber.

For those interested in "the rest of the story" you can read about Juana Maria on Wikipedia or watch a video about her island on YouTube.

I loved this book as a child and someone brought it up on a forum a while back and made me want to read it again. Still just as good as when I was a child. This book would be a perfect gift for a young girl. The girl in the book shows so much courage, compassion, and strength. This book helped me so much growing up, maybe it will help others!

I had not read a novel for a long time. I read it to help a kid with a Book Report. I liked it because it is very descriptive and based on a real history. It is of the style like the Jack London's books " A Daughter of the Snows", " The Call of the Wild", and " White Fang" in which nature is very descriptive.
