From the Author
I wrote the first draft of this book when I was twenty-three, although I'm not even sure if it makes sense to call it the same book. It took place on an island in Greece, and it was a strange, somewhat confusing jumble of a book about characters coming to life from the burned pages left on the rocks and sand.
But The Island on the Edge of Normal, the way it is now, was in many ways my self exploration of love, relationships, and the infinite possibilities that come when we stop listening to what we've been told. I had a number of friends read books like The Ethical Slut, or Open, and while they got the gist of it, it can be difficult to understand something like polyamory through a text book.
In many ways, this was my version of a text book, in the form of a story that I hope allows my readers to submerge themselves in a new model of relationships. Because the truth is no matter how you love, relationships are messy, love is complicated, and there are challenges that you'll never expect. But I hope that in reading this book, you might come to discover that it is possible to love more than one person at a time without breaking your own moral and ethical understanding.
Thanks again for reading, for writing to me, and for sharing your thoughts on the glorious mess that is love.
