The book opens with Kelly recalling some of their past experiences, so new readers will be able to determine whether or not they wish to dive into the rest of the series. However, the story gets underway soon enough. If there is one disappointing aspect of this book, it is that it takes a few chapters for everyone to get to Hawaii. Before that, we are treated to scenes of one character’s birthday and a wedding in Toronto. These are good scenes, and certainly help to create a fuller reading experience, but it might have been nice to spend just a couple of more chapters on Kauai.
Even so, nothing really detracts from the reading experience offered by this book. Sam and Kelly already have a pretty strong relationship at this point in the series, but Kelly’s friends are becoming more fully fleshed out as the series continues. Linda is becoming more health-conscious, Kathy may be getting married soon, and everyone in general is becoming more openly sexual. The fetishes do not reach quite the extreme heights they reached in the climax of the last book, but readers who are interested in the actual story and the basic fetishes on which the series has always focused should be quite satisfied with the offerings presented in this volume.
Without giving anything away, the end of the book is quite unique for this series. Kelly and Sam make a pretty big decision near the end, and Kelly finishes her dissertation and continues to advance her career. While the progress on Kelly’s career is predictable to those who read the last book in the series, the decision regarding her relationship with Sam is something that some readers may not have expected given the passionate yet ultimately light-hearted nature of their union. It looks like the next book will be giving Kelly a lot of focus, but “Island Experience” does a great job of portraying them as a team. Their relationship has always been, and continues to be, the true heart of this series.
Freier is a skillful author. She knows how to paint word pictures, using as her canvas the world of Kelly and Sam and Kelly’s friends, Linda, Kathy and Julie. For six novels, Freier has labored to create a multi-layered, finely tuned alternate world inhabited by the five, now good friends, and their various acquaintances.
As time and each novel has advanced, there are two certainties in Freier’s universe. The first is that Kelly and Sam, though an unlikely May-December couple, are growing in their love and trust for each other. That growth is mirrored by a stronger, more grounded relationship. The second is that, though they are a couple with all that implies, they are strong enough to have an open-ended, multi-membered group about them who share many of their experiences. The fact is that the interrelationships between Kelly and her friends are as robust and inclusive as are they with Sam.
Now, with book seven of the “Experiences” franchise, we have come to a key point in the growth of the characters. Kelly and Sam seem destined to be together, but in a relationship that is not what one might consider standard. If the world considered polyandry a norm, then it would seem quite all right for four women, albeit younger, to have the relationship they do with an older man. Given the world’s rejection of that form of group life, many would think it weird. However, when you sit in the middle of “Island Experience, Kink and Pink in a Tropical Paradise,” everything is all right. Indeed, it works quite well and the way it should.
It is in this somewhat magical world that we see the real growth going on as Kelly and Sam realize that they have a special future together, hopefully, with their friends along for the ride. The trip to Kauai is just icing on the cake and Freier’s skill as a writer makes you feel you are there with them, having each experience with them.
Freier is a strong writer whose ability to create realistic characters who are growing and changing, even as we watch makes her a master storyteller. We have seen Kelly turn from a beautiful, but young and somewhat goal-less person, into a maturing woman who knows herself and her man. We have seen the widowed Sam move from a somewhat closed off (yes, believe it or not, he was), if thoughtful man, into a much more open and loving human who is, at last, capable of loving again. And, we have seen three, rather young and somewhat foolish people grow into mature, accepting women, ready to face what is ahead.
If it sounds as if I enjoyed Freier’s work, I did. Freier is, as I noted, a master storyteller who knows how to create a compelling tale that is, at once, real to the reader. Like good fiction writers, she makes you suspend your belief and accept her world as reality and the characters with which she populates it real as well. Her ability to set a scene and carry it through to the conclusion is excellent. And, she knows how to wrap up any loose ends, leaving just enough for the next installment.
Like any artist, she works with the tools available to her, words, to create a uniquely and subtly hued world that seems real while you are there and makes you want to head back to see what happens next.
To me, that’s just another mark of a good author. However, Freier offers more. It would have been quite easy to settle on the prurient parts of a BDSM or sexual adventure experience, making them rather lurid and then having them stand on their own. However, that is not Freier’s style. Her finely tuned ability to create layered scenes that seem quite natural sets her apart from many other writers of this genre. Simone Freier is a pleasure to read. That’s why I can hardly wait to see what’s ahead for Kelly, Sam and company in their next “Experience.” If it is like any of the previous seven, it will be surprising, well-written and fun.
Sam and Kelly share their lives, anxieties, hopes and dreams in each book as the reader learns more about them. As each novel progresses, they also become more of a group than a couple as Kelly’s three best friends, Linda, Julie, and Kathy come to love, appreciate and trust Sam as a sexual partner and friend. Utilizing sex as a way to build up that trust while experimenting with various sexual apparatus, ‘challenges’, and experiences makes for an exciting and eye-opening read;)
The beauty of reading is that good authors can take the reader to another place. In Island Experience, I felt as if I was actually in Hawaii along with Sam, Kelly, Julie, Linda, and Kathy as I read Freier's beautifully researched and well-written descriptions of the flora and fauna, food and fun that the group experience on their vacation. Snorkeling with the turtles, sharks, fish and eels, swimming through volcanic tunnels, having down and dirty mud wrestling fights, and eating macaroni salad made the vacation and the book fly by too quickly. Five Stars Freier!!!
