The book opens with Kelly recalling some of their past experiences, so new readers will be able to determine whether or not they wish to dive into the rest of the series. However, the story gets underway soon enough. If there is one disappointing aspect of this book, it is that it takes a few chapters for everyone to get to Hawaii. Before that, we are treated to scenes of one character’s birthday and a wedding in Toronto. These are good scenes, and certainly help to create a fuller reading experience, but it might have been nice to spend just a couple of more chapters on Kauai.
Even so, nothing really detracts from the reading experience offered by this book. Sam and Kelly already have a pretty strong relationship at this point in the series, but Kelly’s friends are becoming more fully fleshed out as the series continues. Linda is becoming more health-conscious, Kathy may be getting married soon, and everyone in general is becoming more openly sexual. The fetishes do not reach quite the extreme heights they reached in the climax of the last book, but readers who are interested in the actual story and the basic fetishes on which the series has always focused should be quite satisfied with the offerings presented in this volume.
Without giving anything away, the end of the book is quite unique for this series. Kelly and Sam make a pretty big decision near the end, and Kelly finishes her dissertation and continues to advance her career. While the progress on Kelly’s career is predictable to those who read the last book in the series, the decision regarding her relationship with Sam is something that some readers may not have expected given the passionate yet ultimately light-hearted nature of their union. It looks like the next book will be giving Kelly a lot of focus, but “Island Experience” does a great job of portraying them as a team. Their relationship has always been, and continues to be, the true heart of this series.
The number of ‘Experiences’ seems endless, thankfully, as Simone escorts us to individual places for sensual erotica. This time she takes us to the splendor of the tropics. ‘Sam takes Kelly and her friends on a trip to a tropical island, where they not only work on their suntan, but also get tanned a few times as part of their spanking play. The friends are even more adventurous and engage in some wild times together in the beautiful island environment. Sam takes them to some places that aren’t on the usual tourist route, continuing to challenge them – and they return the ‘favor’, providing challenges for Sam, as well. The group is loving and loved, as they are now comfortable with each other in ways that most people have never experienced. What will be next for Sam, Kelly and her friends?’
The pleasure (at least one of the many) of reading Simone’s erotica is her flair for character development and creative sensual situations. She does this with a very open frankness, removing any guilt frame of mind that may hamper some readers not acquainted with Simone’s style of erotica. This is not dark and dirty, simply pushing the boundaries of pleasure by adding some fascinating variations on interpersonal actions. Her stories sing, or as she has stated, ‘where fair-is-fair and mutually satisfying’ to all characters she defines. Read one of her books and you’ll likely collect the set. Grady Harp, November 15
