Still, the key advance in this novel is a better use of the primary characters notably Jack as he asks the right questions of the local investigating detective J.R. Holiday to advance the investigation. But this is a character waiting for still further development.
And let's hear it for Miguel - a jewelry store worker with a survival instinct as strong as his libido. He is a hapless villain but also ruthless and devious - an increasingly desperate guy with an almost cat-like ability to survive another day. Pursued by everyone you are almost (almost) rooting for him. His rescue while floating in a black-skied Caribbean void is improbable but it's all in the service of an even darker humor as he finds himself lifted into "heaven" and then...well, why spoil the fun.Read more ›
From the cruise ship-driven business cycle, to the casual "no shirt, no shoes, no problem" mindsets and topless beaches, to the arcane and at times mysterious workings of island governments, reading "Island Ice" left me yearning for my next visit. I could almost taste that cold Carib beer sluicing down my throat as I sat on my favorite secluded beach in St. John watching the world go by.
And, their follow-on to "Wet Feet" gives readers a chance to get to know the main characters like Jack, Andy and Dana even better.
If you're a state-sider like me, do yourself a favor...let "BD" help you escape to the islands while they captivate you with trying to figure out the next twist in this page-turner of a plot. Confession? I read it straight through! That's just how good it is.
B. Jennings, Orlando
The author BD Anderson have written a few books with the same characters, but just relating to the places in St. Maarten that is written, is a pleasure.
