One of the lost Disney greats.

Many years back I worked for the Disney Company & one of the benefits of working for the company back then was that you could borrow any of the Disney movies from the Disney Studio, for the weekend. The company would also loan you the projector (16 mm) & if the movie was a wide screen movie they would furnish you with a special lens attachment to view the theatrical release aspect ratio. Disney had a wonderful selection of top notch movies available to borrow. At that time the majority of movies were actually live action not animated although of course there were a lot of animated movies also. Walt used to have the Disney classics re-released every so many years so that the new generations could enjoy them. Sadly today the shops/stores seem only to carry the recent animated movies. You very rarely see those old classic movies that I am referring to. So when I saw some of those of my favorite movies available on line I had to buy some. "The Island at the Top of the World" is one of those & it is still as appealing as it was 30 plus years ago.
The Disney Company kept the movie master copies in Black & White as Black & White masters last for a hundred years whereas color masters deteriorate much more quickly. The company could make a crisp fresh copy in color using the B&W master. Consequently each re-release was as good as the original. The recent DVD copies I have purchased on line lack some of the quality of those earlier re-releases. However they are still adequate to watch & enjoy. And if you haven't seen these older Disney movies you are missing out on a great selection of very well done wholesome movies. "The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca", "Dr Syn Alias the Scarecrow", "The Ten who Dared", are just a few of those great movies that appear to have been lost to the new generations.

Walt Disney Pictures has a remarkable talent to take legends, traditions and cultures with a unique method to produce magnificent movies that any member young or old can view and learn! This is especially the case with the real meanings behind the fantasy adventure tradition of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells as famous authors that come alive in the Disney's trademark for learning, spectacle, romance and comedy. An American archeologist joins with a rich English businessman who has hired an eccentric French inventor to search for his missing Son. With an air-ballooned, propeller engine dirigible airship, they depart for the Artic at the top of the world to find the missing son. An Eskimo trapper has been hired in this awe-inspiring search. They discovered a world forgotten by time colonized by Vikings in long ships! I was an officer in the EAD-USAF with TDY assignments to Thule, Greenland and R & R travels to Denmark. From Danes I learned a great deal of folklore, history and legends about the Vikings who invaded Scotland and traveled on to Groenland - the top of the world. Disney did it again and brought many of those memories alive.
This is definitely a five star rated production and worth anyone's time to learn history and legend of another culture!

My First Movie

"Island At The Top Of The World" was likely the very first movie I ever saw in a real movie theater, as a 3- or 4-year old boy. So much wonder, adventure and stirring music, and a lot of things onscreen I probably didn't fully understand at the time, made a real and lasting impression upon me. I liked it so much, that my parents got me the vinyl LP record with the large-scale, full-color picture book that often accompanied Disney films in the 1970s. All in all, stereotypes aside, the quality and content was definitely a top priority in this movie, and the production value is such that it is still enjoyable to watch more than 40 years later. I was very happy to find the film on this platform, as it was unavailable on Disney+. Viewing the film again as an adult, it is easy to see where the "Steampunks" (as lampooned in the show Portlandia) may have mined some of their visual inspiration. Perhaps as well, the portrayal of technology and flight embodied in the airship might have influenced my fascination and love for aviation that continues to this day. Also, the movie's depiction of the Vikings got me interested to read more about that culture later on as a schoolboy, which probably helped me make some Danish friends when I eventually found myself as a grad student over there. Fine, then: seeing this movie obviously changed the trajectory of my entire life!

Well worth the money for me. I grew up in the seventies and early eighties so this kind of movie is right up my alley. I know compared to modern movies of this type, this might seem a little boring. But this is before computer generated special effects and the need for non stop action. These kind of movies are always a great trip down memory lane and very family friendly. Whether anyone under the age of 40 would like this, I don't know. The picture and sound quality seem alright, but don't seem to be restored or upgraded to HD.

LOVED THIS FILM FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS!!! And I just watched it again. I still found new things about it I never noticed before.
When I was a kid, and VCRs were just starting to be common, there sprang a new type of commercialism: the video store. Before the reign of Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, movie rentals were privately owned and operated. Anyway, from the age of seven on, every time we went to rent, I chose this film. I couldn't get enough of it. Mom probably should have bought it outright and would have saved a good amount.
While it didn't have as large a budget as some, the story was still compelling. The score is amazing and composed by the award-winning composer, Maurice Jarre (he also scored "Doctor Zhivago"). The performances are good, but I wouldn't say they were brilliant. The screenplay was written by John Whedon (yes they are related; John Whedon is Joss's father). It was the screenplay, the score, and the acting receiving the Disney polish that kept "The Island at the Top of the World" from becoming a late Saturday B flick.

Although not a classic, I reckon this Disney movie deserves more credit than it already gets, I found it to be an enjoyable and charming 90 minute adventure movie.
Made in 1974, the story begins in London in 1907, when English businessman Sir Anthony Ross (Donald Sinden) meets American Archaeologist, Professor Ivarsson (David Hartman) to discuss Ross's Son, Donald, who has gone missing in the Arctic.
The only helpful clues that they have is a piece of paper describing a mythical land, and a carved piece of Whalebone, which when placed on a map appears to point out the position of the island.

The search begins aboard an airship piloted by French inventor, Captain Brieux, (Jacques Marin). During the journey the three men and a small Poodle are eventually joined by an unwilling Eskimo trapper named Oomiak (played by Mako) who was the last person to see Donald alive.
On arrival at the lost land the group are promptly captured by a party of 10th-century Vikings, and after being accused of being the forward party of an invading force, the men are put on trial, and are eventually sentenced to death after being found guilty.

The action accelerates when the group escape their captors and attempt to reach the airship, although the sets and scenery are quite impressive for the time, its during this passage of the movie that an unintentionally hilarious scene occurs, when, as other reviewers have already mentioned, Donald Sinden attempts to outrun a fast-flowing river of molten lava - guaranteed to raise at least a chuckle!

The 1:85:1 widescreen colour picture and mono sound quality are good, the disc also features various soundtrack and subtitle languages, including English, but no extras.
