"Islands" reads as if the story is being told from memory by a grandparent to his grandchild. Author, Bonnie Raine, takes great care to give elaborate details to the setting of the story, but some of the sentences lack necessary commas to give pause to the many adjectives used in her descriptions. At times, it's hard to follow just where the sentence is going. The book also jumps between different subplots in the middle of the story to explain how or why something happened. I found the approach a little choppy, but it may work just fine if being read aloud to a child.
The overall tale presented in "Islands" is cute and clever, offering children an adventure that focuses on teamwork and shows that kindness is rewarded. There are black and white illustrations throughout the story, as well, which lend a detailed depiction of the scenes in the book.
