I sat on a yoga ball for over two years when I worked from home, but found that tiresome to do all day, and would switch from a computer desk chair to my yoga ball when my posture started to suffer. Some reviews warned you'd have to work you way up to sitting on this ball chair all day. I've had no problems! I felt so much more stable than I did on my yoga ball, and because I am not fighting all the roll and directional changes, I feel I am more sensitive to slight changes in my posture on the chair, and quickly correct it (now without thought). If I become aware of changing my posture a lot, I take that as indication that I need to get up and walk around. I feel refreshed when I return to the ball. My old office chair is now sitting in one of our conference rooms, my posture is PERFECT, and the grueling fatigue I used to feel at the end of the day in my lower back and shoulders (that caused headaches and made me feel 10yrs older) is gone. Best of all, that concerning forward roll I used to have in my shoulders from typing on the keyboard all day that gave me a permanant slouching, neanderthal apperance is corrected! (The same forward roll my massage therapist told me had actually shorten then muscles in the front, which had deformed the perfect posture I had before I took to full-time desk work!!). And those weekly massages I used to get? Bi-monthly at best, and that is more to treat workout fatigue. I feel soooooooooo wonderful thanks to this chair!!!
I decided it was time to defend this product because I am dismayed at the reviews who rated the quality of this chair as poor. From my experience at least, I think I can counter most of the negative "quality" comments that I've seen:
Common complaint no. 1: "The ball is too small" -- I saw this review multiple times when I purchased, but luckily I saw other reviewers comment that if you follow the manufacturers instructions on filling the ball, you should have no problems. I followed instructions, filling the ball part of the way, waited a day, and then filled it to full capacity. My ball is precisely the size as described by the manufacturer. And I only have to refill it about every 2 to 3 weeks at most. Funny how following instructions might actually serve a purpose!!!
Common complaint no. 2: "The frame construction is poor/doesn't assemble properly/breaks": I am an industrial engineer by degree and earlier trade. I find the construction very solid. The assembly however was a bit trying because the tolerances are very tight; it was a force fit when I first assembled the chair, but got everything together with a small mallet. This I suggest doing at home (with band-aids at the ready) and bring to the office. I was concerned adjustments would be difficult afterward since I did chose this chair over others because it is adjustable, but I've been able to adjust the chair height fine. And lets be honest, how often are you going to change it once you get it set? And the year of pure enjoyment has made any frustration I had at assembly fade.
Common Complaint no. 3: "The casters are poor.": I have a plastic chair mat, so this might be why I've had no problems, however I can roll over to my file cabinet or bookshelf, all within about 3 ft of me, as well as I ever did in my company-issued desk chair. Okay, so if you are forced to roll all over your office like you've entered the office chair olympics, maybe this chair isn't for you. But then if you're rolling all over creation and back, you're not really going to get the full benefit from the posture correction of this chair. I'm not here to win any long-distance races in my chair. In over a year's time, I've not had a problem. I could see how there could be a problem on carpet, especially thicker home carpet. Get a chair mat.
I did tons of research prior to purchasing this chair, and feel there is no better value for the price. I will continue to recommend this chair.
Very disappointed. I have enjoyed using this chair and now it's rubbish after exactly a year. I gave 2 stars for the time I used it as it was good. But if you use this chair every day, don't bother as it won't last you half a year.
**UPDATE** I called Isokinetics and within 5 minutes they had arranged for a new replacement to be sent out. Very friendly and no problems with the warranty claim. I changed my rating to a 3, because while the chair seems to have a quality issue with the manufacturing they were quick to replace.
- The ball is comfortable if inflated correctly
- Frame seems flimsy
- The back rest seems flimsy
- The ball will easily slip through the bottom part of the frame if not properly inflated
This item definitely does not seem as sturdy as some of the other exercise ball chairs I've used (including other Isokinetics brand chairs). This is not an item I would purchase again.
