The best part is how easy it is to get the concepts and apply them. Self-help books are supposed to help you make some change in yourself and this one does that. I've known I needed to breathe better for years but now I'm finally doing it - in the transitions of my day! I showed the breathing to my elderly mom and a week later I heard her showing a friend of hers. It's so simple but you can feel the difference it makes.
I have always known there is an emotional component to my physical problems but now I understand it better and know what to do for myself. I tried a few of the exercises and felt a shift after the one called "Finding your OFF Switches". I am starting to notice what is happening in my body at work when I am exhausted and also when I am frustrated with my kids. Before I would have just gotten more stressed and tired. I'm learning to feel and release the tension rather than letting it accumulate.
I wish I had this information ten years ago. I expect to re-read the book many times as I get something new out of it each time I pick it up. In fact, I like it so much, I may actually get a hard copy so I can bookmark it and make notes in the margins. I want everyone I love to read this book.
As I picked up this book to read, I'll be honest, I battled to read it. Was the writing poor? Nope, that wasn't it, it's great, easy to read, filled with wonderful stories of all the people she has helped over the years, illustrations, and even a cartoon or two thrown in. Was it my inability to connect with the information ? Wrong again, I found the deep breathing exercises and other interesting information on my mind throughout the day. I realized that my battle was my own. That battle we all face ,in taking the time to really be honest with yourself and deal with some things that need to change for some healing and growth to take place. So why do I drag you into my battles? I do because they might be yours as well. The pace of life, the needs of others and all the things on your plate may be holding you back, but I urge you to take the time to read this book and truly implement even just a little bit of what Denise shared as it will benefit you, your own body- mind, soul , emotions and spirit and the people who love you as well. A healthier you will benefit all those around you.
In this book Denise uses her expertise as a licensed massage therapist and her fascination with people and their stories and got to the point in her career where she grew "adept at intuitively feeling emotional energy held in muscle tissue and translating that into concepts her clients could understand and use to release their pent up energy." You will find these concepts outlined in this book - from learning how to release long held emotion and truly receive healing to learning full-breathing techniques that truly help heal the body as well. She explores this by showing the reader how we have learned to breathe shallowly and how we walk around breath-less and under-oxygenated. Wonderful exercises are outlined in this chapter- be sure to do them!!
Another aspect of this book is that Denise really urges you to follow your intuition with regards to reading this book as certain aspects of it might be more pertinent to you now and others will be later. We all have different stages we are dealing with in regards to our healing process, so we can tackle a little bit at a time as your intuition guides you. She also explores how stress, unresolved emotions and learning to love yourself and your body are all parts that are necessary to the ongoing journey to good health and healing. I found it particularly fascinating how the different parts of the body were linked to different traumas/emotions and how she could discern what was going on according to the tightness and knots there and lovingly guide her client to truly helping them get to the bottom of their physical pain by seeing it linked to some emotional pain and then find a way through it.
I did enjoy the journey of reading this book and urge others to pick this one up, but don't let it sit on the shelf, read it and implement those exercises and look to love yourself enough to pursue good health, healing from old wounds, and truly taking care of yourself and your body.

I am a professional massage therapist who has worked on several thousand precious people over the years; the insights in Ms LaBarre's book are invaluable to a therapist seeking greater understanding of the somato-emotional links and kinks of our clients. I am particularly grateful that I now have a valid source to quote when my guests are asking how their tension got to be so severe. I feel empowered to express tactfully how emotional traumas can be healed trough daily, conscious breath work, and regular bodywork that intuitively addresses these issues in the tissues.

I've tended to absorb more from reading a good story, like Jonathan Livingston Seagull, than from simply being told the facts, so this book was right up my alley!
Somehow I learned a whole new vocabulary of what it means to touch and be touched by someone, and how much I wanted to make that part of my daily life.
Both touch, and writing about opening and self-transformation are as dharmic to Ms. La Barre as swimming is to a duck.
If you ever have the opportunity to experience her healing touch, it is amazing the way she intuitively homes in on old stuck stuff and gently loosens it up, both on the level of the body and the soul.
I think I can honestly say that I'll never be the same again...
