Editorial Reviews

Bill Cunliffe and Gary Foster, in a quartet setting, perform the compositions of Reed Kotler. The overall mood of the CD is romantic, with several Bossa Novas and Ballads, though there are some more lively uptempo tunes and even a gospel tune. Bill and Gary have previously recorded Reed's compositions on the CD "Bobby Shew, Gary Foster and Friends Play the Music of Reed Kotler" (reached #11 national ranking on jazz radio stations and achieved critical acclaim). Bill Cunliffe is a past winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. Gary Foster is a seasoned jazz veteran and has recently appearted live with Billy Tayolor on his highly acclaimed PBS radio show.

This is simply a very beautiful ablum. If you like the quiet style of jazz by Bill Charlap, Alan Broadbent, or Charlie Haden, you will love this also. It's the kind of ablum to listen to after long, hectic day. It'll take you straight to paradise.

What a gem of a recording this one is! Anchored by a fine rhythm section, Gary Foster and Bill Cunliffe will take no prisoners with this one...perhaps one of the best efforts that I've heard in a few years. Yeah, very listenable each track, no bashing or banging, just beautiful music.

It really speaks to the caliber of musician that Gary has been for these many years - based in Los Angeles and in demand by everybody that needs a versatile reedman. Those include the late Cal Tjader, Clare Fischer, Alan Broadbent and just a host of others...an alto sound that belongs to Gary..pure and inviting to want to listen to more.

Cunliffe is a soloists dream...you can't possibly not know where you are at any place on the chart...Bill's soloing is filled with some very nice chords and ideas.

The whole music is from composer Reed Kotler...as they used to say in the old DownBeat mag...'worthy of wider recognition'.

Way to go Gary and Bill!

Just to add my enthusiastic take on this album - the recording itself is impeccable, airy yet very tight. There are no extraneous notes here, and the proceedings are infinitely swinging, with a touch of whimsy and melancholy. Bill Cunliffe and Gary Foster complement each other, like a hand in glove. Good show!
