It’s About TIME invites readers into a head-slapping understanding of how we came to pay workers in this country and how an industry of predatory practices positioned to “help” the poor amid crises have resulted in massive financial stress and a loss of happiness and productivity. The book shares a fascinating look at the role “time” plays in our society and how it’s about time for company leaders to step into their heroic nature and right this injustice.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book radically changed the human dimension of my daily encounters with fellow citizens. Shah's lucid analysis will open your eyes to a huge social injustice and then startle you with a simple and elegant solution that would immediately improve the lives of millions. Once in a while, you read a book and then you go and buy copies for all your friends with a personal note to act. It's About TIME is one of these rare books.

It's About TIME opened my eyes to how performing a routine business process has been causing unnecessary financial duress to a majority of my workforce. On behalf of the 90 million people in America living paycheck to paycheck, and particularly those for which I am responsible, thank you for showing me a better path moving forward.

About the Author

An engineer by training and entrepreneur by accident, Safwan is the founder and CEO of PayActiv. After selling a previous company and committing to his golf game, Safwan pulled himself out of retirement to launch PayActiv and level the playing field for the financially vulnerable. Safwan's work connects the dots between math, economics, history, and music. His first book, It's About TIME: How Businesses Can Save the World (One Worker at a Time), turns conventional wisdom on its head and calls for businesses to embrace the mantle of saving the world.

I read this book in a single sitting on a warm Saturday morning in Berlin. I picked it up for two reasons: (1) I know the author and (2) my recent obsession with books on corporate culture. I am personally looking for ways to move my career in FinTech from pure capitalism to conscious capitalism. So it makes complete sense that I'd pick this book by Dr Shah up and give it a read.

Here's the thing...it is about time that we consider what time means to those who have less, who are working like mad to just keep their heads above water, and who consistently make the world run and operate. We have gotten lazy in our unwillingness to innovate on behalf of our employees and I want that to change. So does the author.

This book is history lesson, cultural guidebook, and a math textbook rolled into one. All while telling us to move the world towards improved lives for all...not just for those of us who have the privilege of higher education and the luck of birth location/family. It's about time that we think about how others live and figure out how to get them what they need in order to alleviate stress and desperation. Safwan's book helps us understand how we got here and encourages us on the path to a better future for everyone.

It’s pretty amazing when an idea as easy to understand and powerful as Safwan’s was, at one point in time, important enough to be mentioned in major writings, bible, etc, and somehow was lost along the way to detrimental effects.

So many employers are looking for ways to improve morale and productivity, especially among workers who live in some of the tightest economic conditions. Look no further.

With wisdom right up there with The Richest Man in Babylon, Safwan explains how he has both lived the stress of waiting for a paycheck while paying large amounts of fees and interests to access money that he had already earned, to seeing the bigger picture today’s smart employers are leveraging to ease worker stress, lower turnover, and provide a more humane working environment.

Safwan Shah does an excellent job explaining the importance of TIME as it relates to financial well-being. For the millions of low-income, hourly workers, TIMING of pay is the difference between making ends meet and falling into debt. This book is inspirational, informative and above all else an attempt to open the eyes of business and HR leaders to a solution for a serious financial problem in this country. A great read and a force for change.

Great book with revolutionary business ideas and applications for helping bring sustainability to employees who are among the working poor. A must read for business leaders who are looking to expand their social impact.

When you start reading a book by a secular humanist and in the first pages he is making his argument by quoting Deuteronomy, you know you are in for an intelectual treat. Safwan is a talented and erudite craftsman of the written word, his prose is concise, well reasoned and enjoyable to read. This is a book that will keep your interest while it both instructs and makes its point.

As to his thesis, Safwan is among a coterie of business thinkers that calls capitalism to be both conscious and to have a conscience. He has analyzed the impact of current worker pay practices and uncovers both the problems created by current batch process (worker stress, predatory payday loans and other such products, to name a few) and presents a solution that is workable, simple and ethical. Also, he clearly maps out the benefit to employers. He calls us back to those visionary capitalists of the early 20th century who understood the benefit of a well cared for workforce. Safwan’s solution is to use technology to allow workers to access earnings in more real time, when needs arise.

Beyond that, it is an excursion into the history and philosophy of wages and those who earn them. It is an easy read because it is a delightful romp around a topic that one might think is prosaic, even if timely and crucial.

Read this book. It will not only teach about a problem and propose a solution, but it will inspire leaders to creatively think about the needs of their workforce and inspire other small actions that can add up to large benefits. Like all good entrepreneurs, he looks for practical solutions to real problems that can change the world for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars The world is watching

My relationship with the author goes back 34 years. But we met only recently - at dinners, lunches and even at tea.

Safwan was first introduced to me as a Rocket Scientist, then a Software Engineer, later a Business Man and finally a Golfer. This book won't disagree. And while the world quietly watched on, Safwan challenged modern payroll only to reconstruct it. This book shows how it was done.

It's About TIME allows me to encapsulate and preserve a beginning, a lesson and a bond.
