‘It’s About Time’ is a novella in the Time series by B.A. Dillon. I was honored and delighted to receive a complimentary copy of this new book from this author - who has also become my friend. I probably shouldn’t mention that; you might think I’m biased, but honestly, writing a truthful review for our blog is a responsibility I do not take lightly and I will always be straightforward about a book for you, our readers. And truly, the guys in this book completely melted my heart and filled my soul with bliss and my eyes with happy tears. These are simply the markings of a really good book!
This is B.A. Dillon’s first foray into the M/M world and in my opinion, she nailed it. She introduced us to a couple with whom I wish were real so I could become friends with them! This story is about Scott, a fellow teacher and dear friend of the other two teachers in this series (Emma and Mia) and his significant other, Brandon, a completely awesome guy who just happens to be a lawyer.
In general, I really like to “be there” in books when a couple first meets; coming into a relationship already established feels like I “missed out” on the one of the most important parts of the story. As this book begins, these two men were already an established couple (for a while). Within this book, however, Scott reminisces about how he and Brandon met. And the way this was done brought the experience to me, the reader, and I felt like I had actually experienced it in that way. As a result, I don’t feel like I “missed out” on that oh-so-important part of this story. And even as Scott tells his best friends how they’d met…
“There’s more to that story, I’d bet a week’s pay,” Julia announces to the crowd. “Nope. That’s it. You asked how we met. That’s how we met.” “But there’s more that happened that night. Right? Tell us all about the first time you had sex!” Julia asks through a huge smile. “That would be a definite NO! First off, Evie is here. And for the record, I never kiss and tell.”…The memories of our first meeting leave me with a silly smile and a little pep in my step. I certainly enjoyed that walk down memory lane…Some stories need a little privacy and there’s no reason to share details… (But don’t worry, we get the story later as he remembers the rest of the story in private.)
This story follows a pretty common set-up for a B.A. Dillon book; the book begins by giving the readers some background – setting up the story (as it were). It can seem a bit simple at the beginning because of this but please, believe me, keep reading. It’s just laying the groundwork for what then opens up to a story about two guys who are regular people, just like other people, who are together in every sense of the word and it’s truly a beautiful thing to watch. The support they give one another is something most of us only dream about. The support they get from their non-blood “family” they are lucky enough to call their friends is amazing and this is honestly not a surprise; we’ve already met a lot of them in the first two books. The blood-families of these two amazing men are also very supportive of their relationship (although one of the moms gets a bit excited during part of this book and had me both laughing and cringing at the same time).
If you have not read any M/M books in the past, this is the PERFECT one to begin with. This introduces these guys as regular people whom are very easy to like and to relate to. This is a novella, so the excitement of the police work that has been a main-stay in the first two books in this series does not appear in this one; this book is solely about relationships. It is about human connections. It is about family. It is about love.
That does not, however, mean this book is boring. It is not. I found myself reading each page with delight and smiling at the people surrounding this couple. When Scott is hanging out with some of his women friends (including Mia and Emma), things get a bit rowdy and these women are a hoot. At one point…
“…Who has the Sharpies?” Rebecca digs out red and black Sharpies from her purse and passes both markers along to Julia. “Let’s hit the crapper…I’m giving you an ass tattoo that you won’t be able to see or wash off for at least a week! Brandon’s gonna thank me for this in the morning.”…
Reading this book was fun. It’s a heart-melting story about two amazing guys and their friends and family. It’s about recognizing your life-partner and building a life with them; no matter who they are - and accepting them for who they are to you within your life…
“Life can be thought of as a series of choices. I chose to follow my heart and become the man I knew I was supposed to be. And that’s why when I say I choose you, Brandon, I make that choice with a free and open heart. I love the person you are and person you make me….”
If you have not yet discovered this series, you are seriously missing out on some very special books. You could honestly read ‘It’s About Time’ as a stand-alone. It would support it. But I would highly encourage you to read the first two books in this series too; and I’d do it in the numbered order. I’ve reviewed both books on this blog and you could find the reviews via the search box on our blog home page. There’s a little of everything in those two; some action, a lot of romance, just the right amount of sex (and yes, that includes this one and I found the scenes sexy and well-done) and also about building beautiful, strong relationships.
They also have a bit of a paranormal twist – not in a spooky way at all – more of an exploration of senses beyond what we experience on an everyday basis (although this element is not present in this particular book) and they were so very well done that they quickly became some of my favorite books. This was how this author and I became friends. I was so very moved by reading the first book that I wrote to her and told her how much her book had touched my heart. She answered. I answered back, etc. We became friends because of how much her writing talent affected me emotionally that it overflowed and I felt compelled to write to her to express my appreciation of her talent. And we’ve kept in touch since that first e-mail!
Honestly, read these books (please)! Not because B.A. Dillon is a great gal; read them because these books are really good. They are unique. They do not follow any “standard” formula of how to write a romance novel. They are very original. And if you begin reading any of them, please keep in mind the first chapter or two is setting up the story and just keep reading. Once the story blossoms, you’ll begin to feel the love. I hope you read these and enjoy them as much as I have. I know I will continue to enjoy this author’s work for as long as she writes these delicious books!
