Jennifer Dukes Lee shares how control had become a coping mechanism to numb herself from the pain of life. She discusses the unhealthy affects control has upon us and how it can break us down, piece by piece. There’s a cost to control. This quote by Jennifer summed it all up for me. “I can’t begin to tell you how I willingly withstand the pressure of believing I have to be “in control,” reliable, on top of all things—and how often that self-pressure completely breaks me. I’ve learned to hide the fractured debris of my overworked life.” This resonated with me on so many levels!
I couldn’t put the book down! I highlighted and journaled my way through the powerful truths and nuggets of wisdom. Jennifer Dukes Lee gently guides the reader through her Crack the Control Code plan and accepting the invitation from Jesus to live our lives in a new way. I say yes to Jesus because everything in my life is not fine, even though I tell everyone it is, including myself. It’s All Under Control is about getting our control, under control, surrender, and accepting God’s best for us.
I loved Jennifer’s description of surrender, “Surrender is willfully accepting and yielding to God’s plan for your life—no matter the cost.” It’s about being who God created us to be, living intentionally, and finding the peace we all long for.
I had so many “me too” and “aha” moments throughout the book. I experienced revelation, introspection, and hope of being able to untangle myself from unhealthy control. This quote by Jennifer Dukes Lee drove it all home for me, “I want depth but I stay stuck in the shallows—because I’m strung so thin. My desire to love well is why I say yes too often.” Yes, and Amen!
Jennifer walks alongside the reader as she shares her personal stories. I love the Bible verses, characters, and stories she shares throughout the book. “It’s All Under Control’ has useful tools to implement the Crack the Control Code plan; The Three Control Characters, The Decision Tree, and a Control Code Continuum. They are all highly effective and easy to follow.
“It’s All Under Control” is a must-read for so many beautiful reasons. I absolutely love Jennifer’s honest and engaging writing style. I’m confident this book will speak to the hearts and souls of other women as it did me.
What! Not rescue people, not manage outcomes! Wait! That's what I did my whole career! I definitely recognized myself in this book and you probably will also. This book is so much more than 'Let go and let God.' I learned so much about myself, what I need to delegate, what I need let go and how to say no. Jennifer takes you on a journey to learn how to listen to God and let him guide your agenda. I highly recommend *It's All Under Control*!
“This is what she does—she keeps it all under control, and she is under control, thank you very much. Smiling, even in the trenches. And always, fine, just fine.
“I got this,” she says. And a lot of people believe her.
But she doesn’t “got” this. Her outward fine does not match her inner fatigue.”
Does that sound familiar? It does to me. I have lots of friends who feel the same way too. We’re all working hard to keep up with what we perceive as everyone else’s expectations, all the while simmering under the surface. Jennifer understands how we feel and she doesn’t ask us to push aside our feelings of responsibility and ambition to become a better Christian.
Unlike so many other books intending to help busy women create a more peaceful home and family atmosphere, Jennifer isn’t trying to change the fundamental way you were created. In fact, she celebrates those of us who really were created to be strong, busy, Type-A women. She acknowledges all the things we’re really good at and the impact we make in our lives. It’s refreshing to read a book and not feel like the author is trying to ask you to sit quietly and shove your ambition back into a box.
The greatest gift this book offers is an author who skillfully delivers encouragement to use our natural gifts well while also challenging us to become better. She doesn’t shy away from the truth about how strong women can be controlling and downright difficult when we’re unhealthy. She’s absolutely correct that there are many different reasons we try to maintain control over various aspects of our lives as well. Like a friend sitting with you on your couch, she talks you through how you’re feeling and where you want to go. You’ll find everything you need to start making helpful changes in your life.
I appreciate her candor, humor, and compassion throughout this book. She obviously cares about her readers and is committed to helping each one do the hard work of self-evaluation. Jennifer Dukes Lee is the cheerleader every strong-willed woman needs to help her believe in herself, understand that she doesn’t need to do everything, and learn to rest well so she can conquer the world again tomorrow.
Each chapter shares a slice of her story and how God showed her areas in her life that she needed to work on. Each chapter has a 'Cracking the Control Code' section with practical advice for dealing with our own controlling tendencies.
Whether you met Jesus today or decades ago, this beautiful book is a call to action--the kind of action that results in true rest.
