Editorial Reviews

America's favorite back-stabbing bar owners are at it again in the outrageously over-the-top Season Eight of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia! Join the gang at Paddy's Pub for more disagreements, divisiveness, debauchery and depravity as Charlie and Dee find love among Philadelphia's high society, and Dennis crashes his ex-wife's wedding. Frank loses his memory - and his mind - in a hopeless search for lost treasure, and insanity ensues when the whole gang winds up in therapy. Featuring an all-star cast and loaded to the hilt with hilariously inappropriate and unrated content, Season Eight rules the world!

I especially loved the horror movie spoof. I think this is the funniest season ever. I'm about the same age as the actors, so a lot of the jokes/pop culture references they use, I get a kick out of/understand. The running gag of Gugino's is hilarious (hope that's the right name, I went to imdb to find that).

I've been a die hard fan of this show since episode 1 and I'm glad to say that Season 8 is yet another batch of hilarious hijinks that continue to make this show one the most funny and brilliant programs on television today. A lot of people may find this shows' humour to be too raunchy and over the top and like many other shows after it runs a few seasons it begins to spawn it's own "hater fans" (think Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons) that continue to watch the show only to complain about "how it's not as good as the earlier seasons" or "how they are recycling their own ideas." I've read numerous reviews on this season and even the few previous seasons stating these exact words and I couldn't disagree more. I have never seen a demise in this shows' quality as I have found every episode to be flawless except one ("Franks Brother" from Season 7 fell flat for me but it did have a few good jokes). This season even pokes fun at itself for recycling its own ideas in one episode and has cameos from nearly every secondary character this show has ever had so far in its 8 year run. The Waitress, Rickety Cricket, The Mcpoyles, The Lawyer, Dennis' Ex, and even Dennis and Dee's Nazi Grandfather make a return for the opening episode which is a great throwback to Season 1. To me this show is the new Seinfeld as it has never been more fun to watch a group of self involved people try to better themselves and outdo one another all while not caring at all about the people's lives that they destroy along the way. If you've been a fan of this show and its first 7 seasons then this season will not disappoint.

Always Sunny is a show that may have increased in scale of deviancy and depravity, but has still remained true to core values it displayed from the very first episode. Some truly unique memes, catch-phrases, and premises have arisen from this series and I can easily watch the episodes repeatedly. Unfortunately the acting ability of the original "gang of four" outside of Sunny is flat at best, with only Charlie Day doing anything worth mentioning, and even then he basically plays an adaptation of his character from Sunny in everything he does. That being said, I still enjoy all of them, in or outside of Sunny with the exception of Glenn Howerton who I'm convinced is the same character he plays on Sunny in real life. :)

In any case, the 8th Season is also worth watching and the show has currently been renewed through a 12th season so there's a lot more after this!

Another funny season at Paddy's bar with this cast of characters. Funny as hell and will keep you laughing all the way through if you like this sort of humor. If you don't, you might want to stream a few on Amazon Prime before making the leap to purchase it/them.

IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA: THE COMPLETE SEASON 8 has been out for about a month now, and has recently been reduced in price at some of the big boxes. I have mixed feelings about this two-disc set but am glad I bought it.

PROS: Some very funny episodes here. My favorites are "The Gang Recycles Their Trash," "The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre" (impending nuptials to Liam McPoyle!), "The Gang Gets Analyzed," "Charlie's Mom Has Cancer" (including Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs' star turn as a touchy-feely healer), and "Charlie Rules the World" (an MMORPG with avatars for all the gang).

CONS: Only ten episodes, but that is not too far off par for this series. "Frank's Back in Business" and "The Gang Dines out" in particular feel perfunctory and phoned-in.

DEBATABLE: Some of the funniest episodes have distinct antecedents. "The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre" will be much funnier to people who understand Dennis' prior interaction with Maureen Ponderosa and the gang's uneasy history with the McPoyle clan. "The Gang Gets Analyzed" harks back to a much earlier episode about a group intervention but if anything, the second time is even funnier so I forgive them. "The Gang Recycles Their Trash" in particular lifts dialog from earlier episodes in earlier years, particularly "The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis" from 2008 (selling gasoline door-to-door). This repetition was done on purpose but some people missed the joke and found the plagiarism lazy rather than comic.

MORE PROS: Really good bells-and-whistles. Four of the ten episodes have full commentary.

Ok the gang are back...but this series, which was great in the beginning, then turned worse and improved again has again gone downhill. However like every season it contains a few great passages that are worth it but overall it gets tiring.

I have loyally watched/owned all the previous seasons and yes, I too read some of the bad reviews from previous seasons and realized that they were right, some of the previous seasons were HUGE LET DOWNS. However, I LOVED the 8th season and feel that they have gotten back on track and it was EVERYTHING that I had loved in seasons 1 - 3 (4 - 7 began to slip and suck). Give it a shot, especially if you've given up on the gang in the past and I honestly feel that you will NOT be disappointed.
From Nazi Pop-pop, the Zombie Rabies, the Restaurant Tributes, and the Great Defense - it was all great!!!
