He has a special knack for taking what appears complicated (or has been over-complicated by others) and boiling it down to the fundamentals, while at the same time making it an enjoyable read. Tongue-in-cheek comments are found throughout, and they always make me smile.
Kelby himself notes that the target audience for this book is not current devout Christians. Personally, I think that many who profess to be Christians could learn a lot and rethink why they live their lives the way they do by taking a sincere read through this book. Also, there are many gems in here for current Christians who are not always certain how to answer questions from friends who may be curious about Christianity. Kelby has a way of wording things that make you think "I wish I had thought of saying it that way..."
If you are a Christian steeped within a specific denomination with your own history of strong traditions and customs, you might find some ideas in the book a bit out of your comfort zone...but you must remember that this is an introduction to Jesus, what He has done for all of us, and guidance for the journey to finding a compatible church community with which to fellowship and continue to grow. There is no room here for petty interdenominational squabbling over the correct ways to dress, eat, and act.
One of my favorite sections is on how to find a church. Kelby makes it clear that he is not pointing anyone toward any particular denomination, but advocates a "taste and see" approach. If the first church you visit makes you uncomfortable, then try a different one. There are so many different sizes, and styles of services, and variances of behavioral norms (which often have nothing to do with doctrinal differences), so a new Christian must do some exploring to find a church at which they'll feel at home and part of a caring community. Most importantly, don't think that you have 'give up' things that you enjoy when becoming a Christian. If there are activities that God would rather you not be doing, He will impress that upon you in His own timing. Don't let someone else dictate those things to you (well, you probably shouldn't be murdering or stealing...there are some things that are pretty clear!)
I would suggest that if you're a Christian wanting to discover new ways to answer questions that friends might have about your Christianity, pick up this book!
For those that are curious about who Jesus was, why Christians follow Him, and the day-to-day life of the Christian walk, this is definitely the book for you.
I really like Mr. Kelby's books on photography; I feel that is where his gift truly lies, and one can sense his absolute commitment and decency there, as well as a great sense of humor.
