"One of those rare American icons that you're just not allowed to dislike. Loving Willie Nelson, like paying taxes and pretending to have an opinion about politics, is just part of being a citizen of the United States...A legend". Vanity Fair

I like his music, but have never seen him perform (but now I have tickets for this summer) and didn't know much about him, other than some things I have read in newspapers and his legal troubles. Those are covered in here and how he keeps on going. He relates much of his life to his music and he covers his childhood to the present in these pages.
He does begin with his IRS troubles. He is blunt in his language and his attitude. He writes as he speaks and yes there is profanity in here. That is just how some talk and his writing is seemingly as honest as his manner.
He does tell about downing huge quantities of whiskey and wine, experimenting with LSD and of course his ongoing love affair with pot.
If anything else his song writing is amazing. He has written some of country music's greatest classics: Crazy, Pretty Paper, Funny How time Slips Away among others. He tells how they came into being and how they and others were recorded.
Despite all this, what is overriding is his love for family, friends, even his different wives, women, and his faith. This might be old hat for his tried and true fans, but these are his personal stories and his look on life and the background of his music, his songs and how his recordings came to be.
This is a book for Willie Nelson fans and when you read it you will have more of an appreciation for this man and his music. It might even make new fans for the man and his songs.
He champions marijuana. No surprises. He has had tumultuous personal relationships and marriages. No surprises. It is evident through his music that there is an overall sense of sadness and depression in his life. It might seem strange to note his claims that he is overall optimistic, but that also makes sense. His early career was marked by refusals of producers to support his musical style and choices. To meet these refusals with continued efforts to find musical outlets while at the same time supporting himself by working at distinctly non-musical jobs, such as a door-to-door salesman for various products indicates optimism and self-confidence.
His musical style, the storytelling style, is the story. As he details country music legends who influenced him, the reader can see that Nelson is a great synthesizer, combining all the styles he loves and adding his personal twist. That is one part of the story. Then there is the financial part with his battle at the IRS. A third story is his role as a songwriter for so many others, a role that led to many friendships such as when he wrote “Crazy” for Patsy Cline. Finally there is the story of a man with a strong sense of faith, a fair and honest man who never the less leads an exuberant bad boy lifestyle.
There are no spoilers, no surprises, this is just a pleasant read that affirms what many knew about this great singer and songwriter.
This book is an easy read and is not sugar-coated. It is no surprise that the book is peppered with coarse language. But that's pure Willie and he doesn't much care if it offends. Yes, this is Willie Nelson telling the story of his life, and he doesn't hold back. I've already loaned my copy to my friend who is a Willie fan. He's half-way through and says it is a fascinating story. If you're not a Willie Nelson fan, read the book and you will gain a whole new respect for this man who refused to quit following his dream.
Although I am a product tester/reviewer and am fortunate to receive many products at a discount (or sometimes free) in exchange for my HONEST and UNBIASED opinion, this was a product purchase that I made at the same full price anyone could have purchased it. Either way, it doesn't make any difference because I ALWAYS pretest every product prior to writing a review. I am free to write whatever I believe to be true, whether negative or positive. This is my true story and my honest opinion.
This gem was exactly what I was hoping for. It was still replete with little asides that he might murmur in a concert but they weren't peppered in each paragraph. His love of Sister Bobbie, his honesty with his former wives, his respect and his simple way of thinking that makes perfect sense was the Tao of Willie. I loved this. I love his love.
