Operating under the premise that breaking up is an art form "like synchronized swimming," lifestyle reporter Grossman's and television writer Wainess's book cajoles readers to efficiently dump their lame not-so-significant others and proffers up strategies for surviving the aftermath, but the authors are less interested in helping readers than in trying to entertain them. The quizzes, charts, tables, graphs, "breakup trees" and myth-busting lists that populate this book offer little in the way of guidance, instead relying on juvenile humor (on breakup sex: "Ohhh baby, is this hot"; on surviving getting dumped: "just decide your ex is an uber-villain," but "don't...burn down your ex's house") that distracts from the book's breakup philosophy: know what you want to do, then do it, firmly. Readers looking for lessons on the art of the breakup will find little substance here, but the authors' relentless joking, though certainly not for everyone, may appeal to readers looking for a way to while away lonely evenings.

I purchased this book when my boyfriend of two years and I broke up. It brings back the humor to a break-up and is realistic in its approach to break-ups as well as is honest and truthful. This can be read for the dumpee or dumper (I found far more books on assisting the dumpee through a break-up than a dumper. This book recognizes that dumpers also hurt and suffer through and after a break-up). The most important thing is that this is not a self-help book, or it does not act as such.

I got this for my daughter after a bad break up. The book is very helpful and is full of useful information about this subject. The fact that a lot of our young ladies have low self esteem issues is a terrible thing, but this book is a light, funny reminder that young ladies need to value themselves first, then can learn to value another person who values them. The book tells it like it is, with some humor. If you or someone you love needs some encouragement, this helps. A female friend of mine recommended this to me for my daughter because she said it really helped her after a hard break up.

We have all been the dumper. We have all been the dumpee. We all can relate to this book. While I cannot apply this book to my life at this exact moment in time (or am I just in denial, like this guide would suggest?), I can recall all of the feelings laid out in this tounge-and-cheek guide. This book had me giggling one minute and serioulsy contemplating the next. The ideas in this book are so real- its like all those things that you think in your head, but have never seen written on peper. You mean someone else feels that way too? If you just started a relationship: read it! If you just ended a relationship: read it! If you've ever been in a relationship: read it! If you ever plan to be in a relationship: read it!

I recently bought this book along with 4 others about break-ups. The positive reviews make me think I would get a good laugh out of it. It's TERRIBLE. The entire book is about how much relationships suck, what a waste of time they are, and how they are doomed from before they start. There was nothing remotely helpful or funny about this book. I actually found myself skipping entire pages because it was so negative. The last thing I needed while going through this break up was a book promoting bitterness. If you weren't depressed before you read this, you will be before you finish it (if you can finish it.) Look elsewhere if you want to actually get any benefit. "It's Called a Break-Up Because It's Broken" by Behrendt & Ruotola-Behrendt has been a good one for me. It's a little silly, but mixed with the occasional cheesy nick-name are valid points and a real plan for healing.

Fresh Voice in a Stale Genre

I went thru a really tuff breakup and I had so many questions, but mostly WHY ME and HOW DARE HE? This book was really great in making me feel like the the pain of relationships is common, expected and that I am not the only one going thru these tons of negative feelings that pop up when you feel rejected and left behind. Relationships fail, thats life and this is a great book that shouts truth and gives you a good laugh when you need it most. You may not want to hear everthing the authors write about but there is so much truth in their words. Its a fresh take on all the other other books that make you feel that all love works, sometimes love isn't really love and they address that. Good Show!!!!

I am going through a tough separation and this book has been fantastic in helping me laugh through the pain and heartbreak. (Sometimes out loud and in public) Despite the overall message that we are all doomed to fail in love and relationships, I still adore this book- it appeals to the sarcastic side of me. A must read for everyone *even if you think you are happily attached.*
