I haven't woken up with a cup of tea by the bed for seven years. It seems such a small thing, but it's one of a thousand things I miss about having someone around to take care of me. I have spent my entire adult life getting things the way I want them, and all I want now is someone to give it all up for.-Jon Richardson

Is your filing faultless? Your CDs, apostrophes, cutlery all in the right places? Can you eat a biscuit in the correct way? Then Jon Richardson (single for seven years and counting) could be your ideal man ...

Living alone in a one-bedroom flat in Swindon, twenty-seven-year-old Jon has had far too much time on his hands to think-in fact to obsess-about almost everything. Jon's obsessive-compulsive personality disorder has seen him arrange the coins in his pockets in ascending size and color code his bookshelves. It takes him less than ninety seconds to locate a receipt for a pair of shoes he bought in 1997-over to the filing cabinet and R for receipts, S for shoes.

But Jon doesn't want to be like this, in fact he would quite like to share his life with someone. But who could that someone be? Someone like himself, a quarrelsome perfectionist, only with breasts and less body hair? Absolutely not. But who exactly is Jon looking for, and where will he find her? Faced with a loveless future filled with his own peculiar quirks and perfectionism, Jon sets about his search for the One. The question is, will he mind her keeping the knives to the left of the forks in the cutlery drawer or organizing the CDs by genre and not alphabetically?

Review

I loved Jon's book. It's even better than the real thing because you can't hear his voice.

I stumbled across Jon Richardson by accident and was immediately sucked in by his wit and cynicism on 8 Out of 10 Cats. When I found out he had written a book I cannot even describe how excited I was. I started reading it the second the package arrived on my doorstep!

It kind of scared me how often when I was reading the book I kept saying to myself "I do that too!" Not all the time mind you because he does go to the extreme sometimes. He manages to make humor out of something that might seem overwhelmingly depressing. It's great. I actually laughed out loud to parts of this book and that doesn't happen that often with other books. In some parts my heart went out to him because of how much he struggles with some of the things in his life. Like when he left university or when he is overwhelmed and has to hide in the bathtub until he can calm himself down.

I was just so glad that the book turned out to be so good. I've read other books by people who I think are funny, but their books are depressingly bad. For example, I read My Booky Wook by Russell Brand which turned out to not be as amusing as the title promised. It made me think that I just found him funny because of his accent! But Jon Richardson completely delivered what was promised: a 293 page refreshingly honest Jon Richardson style rant that remained funny and engaging to the very last page.

If you are a fan of Jon Richardson and his rants this book is totally a must have. Or if you believe that there is in fact a correct way of doing certain things such as pouring tea or eating a meal you will love it.

Jon Richardson is a comedian from the United Kingdom. He's handsome, witty and very, very self-deprecating. He admits he'd be impossible to live and is in search of a very specific, understanding and forgiving woman to spend the rest of his life with.

I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not but I definitely could relate to Jon and saw a lot of myself in him. The book is well written and is a very quick read. If you are familiar with Jon's work then you'll love this book. If you aren't familiar with him then I urge you to look him up on YOUtube first. If you're anything like me then you'll want to know more about this funny guy and will buy the book immediately.

I recommend this book for anyone who likes to delve into the personal life of celebrities and find out they're just human like us.

I like Jon, but this book fails to intrigue
Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2013
I've only recently gotten to know the work of Jon Richardson, so I thought I'd give his book a go. So glad I did. Most of the book was funny and charming, much like Richardson's stand up. However, there was so much more substance to it that just being a joke at the expense of his singledom. There were moments of genuine anger, anxiety... things you don't want to associate with humor, but can easily relate to. Two chapters in the middle of the book were particularly poignant. I felt empathy for him, and felt parallels in my own life. A pretty light read, but for those couple of chapters, yet those are what I keep reflecting upon. Very well done indeed.

First saw/heard of Mr. Richardson on a TV show featuring him, comedian Jimmy Carr and a very attractive lady whose name I don't recall. He appears to be (perhaps really is, hard to tell with some actors) OCD in some interesting ways. He's articulate enough to explain why and how he prefers to do things the way he does. I find myself laughing but also frequently being relieved that I'm not quite as "fussy" about various matters as he is. Looking forward to more books by this gentleman.

half way through and am giving up now ... just a lot of nonsense, shame as Jon is great on stage and i like his humour just not his writing ...

This book was amazing. It had wonderfully funny moments, as expected since it's written by a comedian. However, as a previous review mentioned it was so much more than that, the book wasn't one joke after another but rather an enlightening beautiful 3 day journey that not only makes you love Jon more but makes you reflect on your own life. It's deep, thought provoking, endearing, well written, funny, comforting, inspiring, heartbreaking and Jon, exactly how you would want him to be. There are so many more thing I want to mention but for now all I can say is that I truly loved it.

I have always loved Jon's comedy and appearances on talk and panel shows. However, this book is whole new, intimate level. To borrow terms from the book, we have seen Public Jon and now we are reading about Private Jon. It is everything you could ever want to know about Jon and much more. It is mostly his insecurities, neurotic tendencies, and his constant existential crisis. While I laughed out loud often, I found parts of this novel overwhelmingly bogged down and depressing.

He has an anxiety disorder--there is no doubt about it. It is severely affecting his life, and he is using alcohol to self-medicate. If he got himself on proper medication, I think he would be able to quiet those voices a little and have a happier life. I am surprised no other reviewers seemed to pick up on this blatant display of an anxiety disorder that needs to be addressed. I understand maybe it is not my business, but it truly makes me sad he has lived this way so long and has grown to hate himself for his anxiety issues when there really is no need. Therapy wouldn't change him into a different person. Public Jon would remain the same. Private Jon would get some relief. It would just quiet the really awful voices, and there would never be a need to curl up in a bath tub, drink or shatter a glass to relieve this anxiety.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Interesting and sometimes sad book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 23, 2018
I like Jon Richardson as a comedian, in fact he is one of my favorites, so I thought I might enjoy this book and it did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed the book from start to finish.

Jon writes about his perfectionism and OCPD, how it has affected his life, led to him moving to Swindon for a more solitary life and how he avoided relationships for 8 years. He is now on a quest to find love. He writes in a very humorous way and it is therefore similar to much of his stand up comedy, which is often based on his perfectionism. As Jon writes in the way he would speak it is easy to 'hear' him saying these things as if it were part of his comedy routine. I found a lot of the book very funny and I think many of us could relate to some of the things Jon has done - such as 10 mins after leaving the house we wonder if we have locked the door, and I can certainly relate to liking everything to be clean and tidy with everything in its place.

Jon also has the occasional rant about people and types of behaviour which annoy him, such as bad drivers and selfishness. Some of the book is however quite sad, for example his attempts to lead a solitary life causing loneliness,
his pessimism about finding a love that would last meant he avoided starting a relationship etc. Although, as this book was published in 2011 we, the readers, have the benefit of knowing that things have worked out well for him as he is now married with a daughter.

Overall a good, often funny, very interesting, occasionally sad book about a period of Jon Richardsons life. If you like Jons style of comedy, I think you will enjoy this book.
