About the Author
Cay Shea Hellervik was born and raised in Norwood, Ohio, the oldest of four children. With her husband, Lowell Hellervik, she is parent to two children, three stepchildren, and an adult “son” she and her husband brought from Russia. She graduated from the University of Dayton and earned her master’s degree in developmental psychology from Saint Mary's University in Minnesota. The Minnesota Board of Social Work has granted her the status of Emeritus Licensed Independent Social Worker.
She was the director of a program for Hennepin County's (Minnesota) most serious juvenile offenders for fifteen years. It is here she became a tenacious cheerleader for the parents of serious juvenile offenders. She found that parents are commonly blamed for the choices their child makes, and she believes this blame game is wrong and even harmful.
Her book, It Is Not Your Fault, provides suggestions for actions parents can take to teach their children how to stop committing criminal acts, while also teaching them to make responsible choices by examining and controlling their own thinking and behavior.

The book takes into account the continuum of care & risk factors involved and offers incredibly practical advice to parents, who often feel completely helpless and isolated. Based on a cognitive behavioral approach, Ms. Hellervik's plan for helping the juvenile offender was formed on the ground in her years of experience and makes it accessible for a parent and care team to use in the home. Though she consults the brilliant work of Dr. Stanton Samenow and Dr. Samuel Yochelson, it is not written to be read only by a PhD, but by the everyday parent.
Parents can best help their children when they don't become victims themselves, taking all the blame for the child's behavior. This notion alone is a new approach and can help to empower the parent to get the child the help he or she needs. "It's Not Your Fault" helps the parent grasp this beneficial understanding and then provides the tools and steps necessary to proceed from there.
The practical steps are accessible and clearly defined, particularly the process of logging errors in thinking. The logging exercise allows the juvenile offender and the parent/care team to seize teachable moments, learn remorse and, ideally, to change behavior.
By teaching parents how to work with their child to confront errors in thinking through a step-by-step process of behavioral assessments, workbook work, logging of behaviors, and rewards, Cay Shea Hellervik has given parents and the care team a practical tool that empowers them to help their child.
While there is no guaranteed solution or program, "It's Not Your Fault" offers a fresh approach that is based on proven success that Cay Shea Hellervik experienced in her many years in the juvenile corrections system. She provides a tool to empower parents and their support team to help their child that is practical, honest, and accessible.
