These recordings (I'm also including Mr. Smith's part 2 of the Bach Sonatas for flute and Continuo 2010 (search: DELOS B0040Y7ES8) are a highly important addition to any Flutist's - J.S.Bach - Baroque music aficionado's collection. From what I gather, it is not necessarily a "studio" recording but done on location so for my ears this recording is a well-balanced ensemble that gives a "live feel" to this intimate listening experience. J.S. Bach's Flute Sonatas BWV are presented as a most excellent interpretation of J.S. Bach's intricate rhetorical phrasing. The sound of a wood flute through Joshua Smith's virtuosic musicality puts the flute into a more esthetically balanced setting, a much more noble realm of expression for the instrument than is too often the case with many of the metal-'flautists' who are trying to be heard by playing their things ever louder. So, I most humbly suggest that as a professional flutist/ flute instructor, I'd say that these recordings are a must to own.

The flautist, Joshua Smith, is new to me, but on this evidence I will be looking at more of his recordings! His playing is beautifully poised and well judged, as is the fine harpsichord playing of Jory Vinikour.
This disc has some stiff competition, not least from the recent recording from Andrea Oliva and Angela Hewitt on Hyperion Records. However, in this repertoire I find the employment of the wooden flute and harpsichord used in this recording adds greatly to my enjoyment of the music, it produces a much warmer sound than Oliva and Hewitt produce on their modern instruments. Only two of the sonatas are common to both discs. BWV 1030 and 1031, and this is what annoys me about the Hyperion disc, why include a CPE Bach sonata when surely the thing to do would have been to have included the third in the set, BWV 1032, no such strange idea here, rather we get a wonderful performance of the full set of the three sonatas.
The Partita BWV 1013 is a real tour de force for any flautist and Joshua Smith pulls it off with aplomb, his playing is strong and flows smoothly, yes there are a few instances when you hear him take a deep breath, but this can be excused when his performance of the music is so good.
This is an excellent disc, Joshua Smith and Jory Vinikour are a true partnership and the music they make is truly beautiful. The recorded sound is good and the booklet notes are a real aid to the listener. Highly recommended!
