Amazon.com Review

Hobbits and wizards and Sauron--oh, my! Mild-mannered Oxford scholar John Ronald Reuel Tolkien had little inkling when he published The Hobbit; Or, There and Back Again in 1937 that, once hobbits were unleashed upon the world, there would be no turning back. Hobbits are, of course, small, furry creatures who love nothing better than a leisurely life quite free from adventure. But in that first novel and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo and their elfish friends get swept up into a mighty conflict with the dragon Smaug, the dark lord Sauron (who owes much to proud Satan in Paradise Lost), the monstrous Gollum, the Cracks of Doom, and the awful power of the magical Ring. The four books' characters--good and evil--are recognizably human, and the realism is deepened by the magnificent detail of the vast parallel world Tolkien devised, inspired partly by his influential Anglo-Saxon scholarship and his Christian beliefs. (He disapproved of the relative sparseness of detail in the comparable allegorical fantasy his friend C.S. Lewis dreamed up in The Chronicles of Narnia, though he knew Lewis had spun a page-turning yarn.) It has been estimated that one-tenth of all paperbacks sold can trace their ancestry to J.R.R. Tolkien. But even if we had never gotten Robert Jordan's The Path of Daggers and the whole fantasy genre Tolkien inadvertently created by bringing the hobbits so richly to life, Tolkien's epic about the Ring would have left our world enhanced by enchantment. --Tim Appelo

5.0 out of 5 stars Spine Mystery
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on March 25, 2023
Box set came clear wrapped and in nice condition. You never know what you'll receive from Amazon, however, I was pleasantly surprised to receive the version pictured with the mountain range on the spines instead of what was pictured on the order page. 👍

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy for the price.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 6, 2023
For the price I paid for this set of books I would say they they are a more than fair purchase. I read some other reviews that had claims of some of the books having pages repeated or some of them missing and also some reviews where the books they had received were not a matching set like they displayed in the advertisement. Thankfully my order didn’t have any of those issues. The only draw back I did find was that the box had gotten some damage on a couple of the corners and also one of the books had some corner damage but otherwise they are a perfect set. So based on the price and over all condition I still figured it was worth a 5 star review.

Let me tell you first , the series is a flawless masterpiece indeed . It cannot be described much , so just read it! Now on to the bad role played by amazon , the packaging was , damn careless .. Yup you read it right and i typed it right .. Careless.. The box was torn and bent and the cover of the books were spoilt ( i am very particular about my books , like even a small fold / bend in the book , you will wish you never met me ..) but the pages were ATLEAST safe ! The paper quality isn't soo good neither soo bad ; you know it is just , OK. Not a really worthy buy , but the content makes up , so i would give three stars . The box 's width could have been increased atleast a couple of milimeters so that we can place the books back.. And the other annoying thing is that only in this bookset tolkien's original cover design is well .. the cover design ..But packaging usually depends on your luck ... So I hope you get a nice set , not a torn one like mine! PS- hope this review helped you ! Check out the photos !Have a good day ! ~ yours truly , dragonwizard (amazon + flipkart reviewer )

Bought these books for my son’s 18th birthday at the end of April 2028 and he has just started reading the first book and it is literally falling to pieces in his hand! The pages are just not glued in - very cheap shoddy binding. Very disappointed son.

Having been a fan of the LOTR films (extended cut all the way!), it was about time I read this brilliant collection of stories for myself. Currently, I'm only on the second chapter of the Hobbit, but in terms of the quality of the physical books, I was very impressed with the boxset. It makes for a great collection piece and at a reasonable £23.00, I consider it good value for money. Each book has a gorgeous layout for the covers and is a great size for those on the go readers. This is all I can say for now, I'd highly recommend these books for those new to the Tolkien world. The delivery was a pleasant surprise, as I ordered them on the Thursday and they arrived on the Friday (they weren't supposed to arrive until the following Tuesday) so this was very impressive especially as I don't have Amazon Prime. Highly recommend, take a read!
