I'm using this device to get TV Audio to my SONOS PLAYBAR, and my review focuses on this application.

Many folks have written about problems in getting Dolby Digital or ANY sound from their TV when connecting the TV's optical out to the PLAYBAR. Some TV's have no optical out, some have no sound from their optical out when using an HDMI source, and some others send only stereo to the optical out. See this link for a list of TVs and their level of Playbar compatibility:

sonos.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1931/~/television-compatibility-with-the-playbar

A very simple, fairly inexpensive solution to such problems when setting up a Playbar, and one which has been working extremely well for me, is this J-Tech HDMI Audio extractor combined with a vanilla hdmi switch. (monoprice has a 4x1 hdmi switch for $24 OR an 8x1 switch for $79, and amazon has some good alternatives as well),

Note that this solution will work even for TVs which are said to be incompatible at the Sonos link above, including those for which Sonos says there's no workaround. My TV is one of those. It's a pioneer elite, and I've yet to find one I'd want to replace it with. But my Sonos, Elite and JTech are working perfectly together, since an HDMI audio extractor (such as this JTech) completely eliminates the need for the TV's digital audio output port.

I have a chromecast. This device allows me to direct the sound output to my speakers, and the video output to my projector, and it just works.

I needed this product so I could hook up a Roku with only HDMI output to my older Harmon Kardon Receiver that only has optical digital input. After reading all the review online I was a little concerned because there were a couple of reviews stating that the picture quality was not good. That is not my experience at all. I am extremely picky about picture and audio quality and this thing delivers on both. On a 60" Samsung I can't tell the difference in picture quality with the J-Tech in the mix. Great product. I would highly recommend it. BTW: I NEVER write reviews.

Finally found a product that works for my application:

I run HDMI out from comcast cable box > this device > HDMI cable > DVI adapter > Monitor (with no sound).

I then run the audio out from this device with simple RCA audio cables to my TV, and use the TV speakers as sound while watching on my monitor. This setup did not work with other active HDMI splitters.

Audio quality is good and there does not to be any degradation in picture quality.

I bought this to use with a Roku 3 which only has an HDMI out. My audio receiver pre-dates HDMI. but I couldnt justify the cost of another one, as the receiver sounds great as it is (paired with a decent power amp). The cost of this was worth a try as I needed the digital audio split from the HDMI video and this does just that, and the results are terrific. Seamless 5.1 audio from the toslink optical out with no worries. The cost of 2 HDMI cables, 1 optical Toslink cable, and the J-Tech box and I'm good to go.

I just got this in yesterday. I ordered it for two reasons, my Fire tv device and my Roku player...gone are the Rca audio jacks from both and only the Optic audio cable option. I cannot get either to put out any audio to my audio switch box, which in turns, sends audio to my Bose cinemate. Somehow I came across this. Before needing to have this, I did not know it even existed! When I first saw this, I was worried that it was going to add more clutter to my maze of devices under my TV. The unit it's self is actually very small, a little bigger than a pack of cigarettes. What I have done was got a 3ft hdmi cable from Amazon to connect from the fire to the converter. This is also a powered unit. I easily connected everything and the sound is great! I can now use my Fire Tv or my roku unit with my Bose Cinemate. I plan on eventually having everything on a switch so the power will not be put to everything 24-7 as I think that takes the life out of electronics over time. I had read somewhere that someone had an issue with audio delay when using one of these type of Hdmi converters(PLEASE NOTE-NOT THIS PARTICULAR BRAND/UNIT) I have noticed ZERO lag. I will be back to update soon, so far, so good and I am very satisfied with this purchase!

UPDATE: 8/23/2014: One thing I forgot to mention was the Video clarity. There is NO change on the video running through this and so far, this is working very, very well with my Bose Cinemate system. Amazon Fire TV just added spotify too which makes it all the better to listen to streaming music.

I purchased this device to extract the digital sound from HDMI sources, as my sound system only has optical inputs. This device does that beautifully! I've had zero problems with sound quality, video quality on the passthrough, etc. There also appears to be no delay because of this device. My only problem is the overall build quality of the device. It seems solid enough, but the connectors aren't that great. Example, when I was testing the device when it first arrived. I set it flat on my entertainment center; I connected everything, and it worked. I then picked the device up, and the optical cable moved around in the connector just enough to make it stop working. I tried three different cables, but they all seemed a little loose in the connector. Basically, if there is zero tension on the cable... no problems. If the cable moves ever so slightly... no signal. Even the tension of the cable's own weight is enough to cause this thing to lose connection. I remedied the issue with a zip tie and some ingenuity, but that's not how I like to do things. If the optical connector held the cable more snugly (like it's supposed to do), this would be a five star device. As is, I'd still give it 3.5 if possible. However, 3 is a close as I can come.
