About J. Aaron Gruben
I grew up in the Southwest and currently live in Texas with my wife and five children. I work full time as a veterinarian and am the author of works of varied genres. My books cover a vast diversity of subjects and often highlight historical topics that have become either distorted by political or social bias or have been forgotten by today’s general public. The major goals of my writing are to bring honor to Christ and to edify, to entertain, and to educate readers.
One of my major motivations in writing is to help demonstrate that a careful search through the dusty pages of history (augmented by a vivid imagination confined to the framework of real facts) can be every bit as exciting as the perusal of the most riveting fantasy novel. Truth, as they say, is indeed stranger than fiction. And by combining careful scholarship with imaginative storytelling, I hope to make truth much more interesting than pure fiction.
When I am not writing or repairing sick animals, I enjoy reading, hiking, dancing with toddlers, and playing a variety of musical instruments. I also travel to conventions with his publishing company, Post Tenebras Lux Books, which strives to improve lives and revitalize old truths through quality Christian stories and studies. Christ brought me into his camp at the age of 9, and my relationship with my beloved Savior has been the center of my life ever since.

Blog postNehemiah tells us the joy of the Lord is our strength… Why, exactly, is the joy of the Lord our strength?
This answer is because of the nature of joy; because of what joy is.
Joy is a remembering of certain secret realities. Joy is an expression of the hidden heart that declares God is truly good.
Matthew Henry reminds us the joy in this passage is indeed centered around feelings and thoughts for God. “Let it not be a carnal sensual joy, but holy and spiritual, the joyYesterday Read more -
Blog postSometimes, realizing I am so incredibly blessed hits like a wrecking ball. It’s a truth that upsets my settled habits of anxiety and stress.
Life itself is a great and undeserved gift. How many of us tend to forget that God owes us nothing: not even life? We talk about our right to life as if it’s something we deserve, even as if it’s something we’ll have forever.
But reality is that every moment experienced so far, and every moment in the future, are gifts from a kind-hearted2 months ago Read more -

Blog postOne of the most elucidating truths I’ve ever encountered came from an 11th century philosopher and theologian named Anselm of Canterbury. This single insight has helped clear many theological, philosophical, and even practical questions for me.
God is the Summum Bonum.
Saint Anselm said in a written prayer to God, “And indeed, we believe that thou art a being than which nothing greater can be conceived.”[i]

Blog postA new baby named Knox has come to live among my family, and his grinning eyes have taught me a valuable lesson. As I lay exhausted but sleepless after a long night shift, looking for a moment’s peace, my mind turns up to the one Source of peace that’s never let me down. And I realize that gazing on Jesus, my heart feels very much like little Knox’s face looks when he gazes at his mommy and daddy.

Blog postPsalm 127 is a beautiful psalm… But do I believe it?
It’s easy to read and agree with, but not as easy to live every day.
What happens when I find myself incredibly irritated and super-sensitive to the smallest annoyance from my precocious children? There are times their shrieks are like fingers on a chalkboard. Their naughtiness drops right into my rage center and turns me instantly into something akin to an angry Beorn the Bear. Why? What’s wrong?

Blog post“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” –Mark 11:24
How often we underestimate the value and the power of prayer!
The words of Christ in Mark 11 are confident in their tone: if we ask and believe, we will get our requests from our Heavenly Father. Could it actually be that simple? Scripture certainly seems to say so. Our jaded hearts find it difficult to believe God intends to answer our p11 months ago Read more

Someone is trying to murder Charles Dickens!
Or maybe someone already has…
There’s something strange and sinister afoot on the cobblestone streets of Victorian England. A modern artifact has found its way onto the desk of the inimitable writer Charles Dickens, altering history in terrible ways. To add to the conundrum are hints of hidden treasure and ghost sightings – are they distractions or clues? Could any of it be related to new leads found in a moldering cold case in the future?
Follow Dr. Calvin Schmitt and his team through the smog-choked streets and moonlit rooftops of Victorian London as they investigate mysteries and attempt to save the timeline. But the clock is ticking: lives are at stake and nothing is as it seems.
Swords and songs!
And a bevy of dragons you just might recognize....
Crack open this volume to join Alphonse and Theudebald, troubadours turned dragon slayers, on a zany romp from 13th century France to the Medieval Mediterranean! Along the way meet pirates and spies and inventors. Visit exotic locales and encounter great men of history. Feel the thrill of getting mired in a convoluted slough of Levantine politics. Tremble with the earth at the charge of toothy monsters. You'll laugh a lot. You'll cry a lot. And like real life adventures, you just might learn some valuable lessons along the way.
Crack open these pages if you dare, to find within the antics of a baby with the astonishing superpower to send a man spinning out of his settled orbit around a reasonably comfortable life, and into an epic trek across ancient lands. Read the forgotten wars of a country torn apart by mountain brutes and civil war, health insurance monopolies and secret society passwords that were too long. Peruse with astonishment the deeds of heroes long lost in the pages of Father Time—who was too embarrassed to let anyone read about them until now.
But you just might find between this cover enough adventure, humor, witticism, and heart throbs to prove Father Time wrong, and make the hours you spent reading it worthwhile hours indeed.
