Blog postWe’re looking at science fiction characters I think would make great presidents. Yesterday we saw #6-10, and today we’re counting down to #1.
#5 Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man Since Ross Perot in 1992, American voters have flirted with the idea of a business-savvy, technocratic billionaire president. We elected one in 2016,

Blog postIn honor of President’s Day this week, here are my Top 10 of Science Fiction characters I’d support for president. For most of these, we’d have to amend the Constitutional clause limiting the presidency to “natural-born citizens”. But that’s small beans compared to selling American voters on a half-clad Martian warlord…
#10 John Carter of Mars He’s the abov

Blog postAside from writing books, my favorite diversion is Warhammer 40K. It’s a great hobby for geeks, with so many angles to keep it fresh. It involves model-building and painting, wargaming, and a complex lore encompassing 10,000 years and dozens of novels.
I was able to catch a tournament in Woodbridge a couple of weeks ago, and placed in the mid-ranks. Not bad, considering Northern VA has 7 out of the top 25 players in the country.

Blog postHaving a helluva time sleeping tonight. Can’t stop wondering: “If onomatopoeia were an onomatopoeia, what sound would it represent?”

Blog postBiggest surprise of the night? That there’s actually a county in Texas named Deaf Smith. I’m assuming the clanging of hammer and anvil is what deafened the smith.
My only commentary on the 2018 elections is that I once did shots of Nemiroff honey pepper vodka with Marsha Blackburn in a Kiev pub, and she can definitely hold her liquor. This seems like an important quality in a senator-elect.

Asking for help is hard. Alexandra and I published my first novel independently in 2011, just as the digital book world was starting to grow. We intuitively did a lot of things “right” in getting it out to readers. The biggest thing we did right? Asking for help from our friends. Word of mouth is still the number one way people hear about new books1 year ago Read more -

Ben Sasse on Political Tribalism Senator Ben Sasse’s comments on political tribalism are timely and welcome. He has, in many ways, taken up the role once played in the Senate by Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan — bringing thoughtful, academic cultural analysis into the national dialogue.
His piece in today’s Wall Street Journal on political tribalism could easily have come from Moynihan, back when he was a genuine Neo-Liberal (and alive):

Blog postAugie, my youngest son, reached a geek milestone today — his first real strategy game, Battles of Westeros. We’re gaming out the “Battle in the Riverlands” between Houses Stark and Lannister. He’s the villain in this scenario. With all my other boys aging into adulthood, it was time to train up a new gaming partner. And it’s insurance for his teenage years. As they say, get your kids hooked on expensive strategy games and they wo

Blog postThe NYT just published a toxic bit of race-baiting that I won’t reward with a link: “White Women, Come Get Your People.” It’s most notable for calling white women “gender traitors.”
This also stuck out to me: “These are the kind of women who think that being falsely accused of rape is almost as bad as being raped.”
