The JBL CS 480 loudspeaker system gives you outstanding JBL sonic performance along with a beautifull black high gloss finish. It comes with a powerful 8", 125 watt powered subwoofer.
The CS480 is a beautifully-designed, high-performance home theater speaker system. The system features four identical satellites, a matching horizontal center speaker, and a powerful 125-watt subwoofer. The satellites feature JBL's advanced titanium-laminate dome tweeters and 3-1/2" drivers for unsurpassed power and realism. The voice-matched center channel speaker uses components that are identical to those used in the satellites for seamless pans, with two midranges for extra power and clarity in the dialogue channel. The attractive contemporary design of the system and its black high-gloss finish will complement any flat-panel television and the decor of any room. Wall brackets are included for the satellites and center channel.See all Product description

Out of the box all the speakers have a nice heft to them, a feeling of good magnets and quality build. Fit and finish was excellent. I love the piano gloss black, but I was a little disappointed with the gray side panels of the subwoofer... from looking at the pics (I studied the gallery on JBL's website for more views) I assumed it would be silver or brushed aluminum looking, but it is battleship gray. Not a big deal because it doesn't show much, but still a little less than beautiful. The subwoofer did have a very impressive back panel with various inputs, a level control, and the look of quality audio equipment. It's also very heavy, a good sign. Center channel looks nice although the feet are small and it's fairly tipsy... it rolled forward when I was pushing the TV cabinet back and almost fell, I caught it in my lap. GRRR. The satellites are a little weird looking but I'm getting used to them. They are also unstable because of the tiny bottom and I'm worried the grandkids are going to knock them around but will have to watch that.
I was very impressed they include TWO different types of wall mounts for each of the five speakers. I only used the directional mounts but it was nice to receive custom made mounts that work great with the speakers and are included at no extra charge. The set also includes all the wires you need but I did upgrade to 14guage on the back channel since it's a long run. I used the included wires and sub cable for the fronts, center, and sub and they seem to work just fine and I have turned it up loud.
Speaking of loudness/sound quality: My goal was to upgrade my system without losing any quality from where I was with my old setup. I paired this system with a new Onkyo receiver to replace my old Sony and KHL 5.1 system, and at first I was like "meh"... it was "loud enough" (more than enough for my wife) and "okay" sounding but I was not blown away. That's before I setup the whole system in its final spot and ran room correction on the receiver. After all final setup, I can confidently report that this speaker system is AWESOME sounding. The powerful bass coming from the subwoofer is simply amazing.... you would think there are three of them twice the size doing it. At first I would turn the receiver to full max and say "um, okay, not bad." Now I don't dare turn the receiver to max, I like my windows intact!! No kidding, the sound now is just mind blowing. Extremely loud shaking the house, but still clear, rich, full.... just awesome. I'm no audiophile but I like good sound and the ability to get loud at times, and this system delivers all I want and then some.
As for the price, watch that. I paid $252 to an Amazon partner, but it dropped when Amazon refilled their stock. Then it went back up when Amazon ran out again. I'm still happy with my deal but would rather have paid $199 haha...
Bottom line, if you can get past the looks and the wobbly factor I would highly recommend this system. I am very pleased and will not be sending it back. I give four stars only because of the cosmetic and stability issues, not the sound quality.
UPDATE: My initial review of the sound quality was based mostly on listening to music. Watched a couple BluRays this weekend and I'm equally impressed with the movie sound quality. LFE were very loud and the sound was not too boomy nor muddy... Everything sounded great.
The speakers are not large, of course, but they fill the room with sound that is clear even at loud levels. I use this system for watching TV and movies, and playing video games, and it sounds just great. One quickly becomes immersed in the surround sound. I have this system connected to a Pioneer VSX-523-K 5.1 receiver, which drives the speakers well allowing them to reach their full clarity.
There are two types of mounting brackets included. One is for fixed position speakers and the other is for mounting speakers so that they can be pointed certain directions. Since the room the surround system is in offers a challenge for setting up surround, it was nice and convenient to use the changing position mounting brackets.
Overall, setup was a breeze and the speakers sound awesome.
I have coupled them with Onkyo 609. the end result is mind blowing.
the sub woofer is very powerful and in reality is more then what I require
Gloss finish looks fabulous.
somewhat an awkward shape of speakers makes it hard to place them on stands. however, if fixed to wall then its all good.
Best thing of all is that I live in Australia and these speakers are not available locally. Amazon delivered them in 5 working days. that is unbelievable.
Very happy JBL and Amazon Customer.
I read all the reviews and decided it was the best deal for me.
I did not have time to hook them up until xmas break and when I did my 2 year old Sony receiver died on the spot.
I chose this system to replace a quality speaker system which was physically too large for my new small A/V room.
Early this month I bought a new YAMAHA receiver 7.1 HDMI, etc.
The receiver set up the speakers automatically with supplied microphone system. And with my new Sony blue-ray player, The sound just blows you away during action movies. Just great sound.
