Key Features

25 – 400 watts suggested amplifier power range

JBL engineers designed the ES80 floorstanding loudspeaker to produce impressive, full-range sound from an AVR (audio/video receiver) or amplifier capable of delivering up to 400 watts of power.

Dual 6", proprietary PolyPlas low-frequency transducers

The ES80’s stiff, lightweight PolyPlas driver material, with a rubber surround, gives great bass response, creates a seamless surround field and minimizes distortion, even at high volumes. Together, the driver and surround give you an unmatched audio experience.

4" PolyPlas midrange driver

A great midrange driver is the heart and soul of great sound – and the place where departures from faithful sound reproduction are most noticeable to the human ear. Like the ES80’s low-frequency drivers, its midrange driver uses PolyPlas material. What you hear is true.

The ES80’s stiff, lightweight PolyPlas driver material, with a rubber surround, gives great bass response, creates a seamless surround field and minimizes distortion, even at high volumes

3/4" HF and UHF tweeters

The ES80’s extremely thin but rigid titanium-laminate high-frequency driver and polyester-film ultrahigh-frequency driver deliver accurate, undistorted response, even when the volume is way up. The end result is a full, clear, tight reproduction of high and ultrahigh frequencies.

Proprietary Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS) waveguides

Proprietary EOS waveguide technology in the ES80 delivers precise imaging throughout your listening environment. You get ideally balanced music, crisp dialogue and smooth audio distribution. Every seat will be the best seat in your home theater.

Four-way speaker configuration

Four-way speaker design and high-quality cones make for tight, precise bass and midrange reproduction. As a result, the ES80 offers a full range of frequencies and lifelike imaging.

Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP)

The ideal path from input to components to transducers is a straight line. The ES80 takes that path. Its Straight-Line Signal Path™ (SSP) technology preserves the clarity, detail and dynamics of your favorite audio content.

Computer-optimized, bass-reflex port

The ES80’s computer-optimized, bass-reflex port extends deep bass response. It also eliminates the unwanted turbulence that’s usually associated with powerful speakers.

Outstanding audio output

The small but muscular ES80 offers 100 watts RMS and 400 watts of peak power; crossover frequencies of 700Hz and 3.6kHz at 24 decibels/octave and 12kHz at 18 decibels/octave; and 90-decibel sensitivity. Have fun.

Accurate frequency response

The ES80 doesn’t over-emphasize or under-emphasize any sounds. With a frequency response of 45Hz - 40kHz, the ES80 reproduces a true, full sound range - from deep bass tones to ultrahigh frequencies.

Bi-wiring capabilities

The ES80’s internal dividing network enables bi-wiring capabilities that offer you more flexibility in amplifier selection - and serious sonic advantages in the audio response.

Magnetically shielded

The ES80 produces great, sit-anywhere sound in your room. And you can put it anywhere, because it’s magnetically shielded for safe placement near your TV or video display.

Just about two years since I bought these from Amazon.

Matched them with a Harman Kardon AVR 145 and wow. This was a team. I have heard many tower speakers from different family and friends, and of course from Best Buy and the like. These speakers can handle a lot of sound and keep clean without distortion. I have certainly given them a workout to test their limits.

I have throughout the life of these speakers changed receivers. The first, AVR145, made any music and any show have the loud booming bass you might expect from a subwoofer and more. It was great. I loved it. Any song from Classical to the "rare once liked but now am trying for the sake of the speakers" rap song played well. Then came the switch to a new AVR 3600. I lost the bass in the same music I was playing just the day before the receivers changed. I know these speakers could do so much more, what was the deal? I eventually even bought a sub to get back my lost bass. I wasn't happy. This receiver wasn't bass boosting like the first clearly must have been...

Then, it happened.

I watched Harry Potter on Blu-ray, mind you my sub was in the repair shop(go figure), and that is when it happened. The speakers blew my mind even further than they had ever before. I was honestly afraid that the china on the shelf just a few feet away was going to rattle off. I clearly remember the stone walls separating in the movie and that my house felt it was about to separate as well. This is with the equalizer set to a flat response as all high quality recordings and playbacks should be set. That showmanship of the power these speakers can dish out made me realize that they were a better purchase than when I had feel in love with them after the first week of owning them.

I have a pair of ES80 speakers connected to a 7.2 AV-Receiver with a nominal output of 120 Watts per channel. The system has been running in my 450 sq. ft (45 m2) living room for about a year now and plays back from a variety of sources such as CDs, TV, radio, computer, DVD and even portable tape recorders on the auxiliary port.

The two ES80s produce great sound whether music or home theatre. There is virtually no humming, high and medium-low frequencies are handled cleanly and even low base makes it possible to forget about a subwoofer in most cases. Even at high volume the speakers stay relatively "unimpressed".

You will get the most out of these speakers, if paired with high quality input sources and media: Home theatre, modern digital recordings, internet radio, HD TV and other goodies of modern sound technology. Simply bying a pair of ES80s just to use them with an old-fashioned stereo system might give you less than your money's worth.

For further configuration options the model also possesses "Bi-Amping" connectivity, which offers the option to connect each speaker to two separate channel inputs instead of the usual single "red/black": this allows slightly more sophisticated sound utilization for advanced users and equipment.

In conclusion, a pair of JBL-ES80s will satisfy most medium-to-high-end requirements because of its quality and adaptability. It may even be suited for professional use in appropriate combination with other speaker types.

(ADDENDUM - SEVERAL MONTHS LATER)

The system has now "grown" after the addition of a center speaker (passive subwoofer), an active subwoofer and a blue-ray DVD. The focus is obviously shifting from audio to enhanced home theatre viewing. Even now the ES80s are performing flawlessly.

I got these for $199 on Amazon (obviously). What a deal! These things are amazing on their own. We are using them for the main left and rights in a 7.1 surround setup and everyone who hears them are blown away.

We love the sound from these and since that is the core reason we picked them up, they meet our need!

The ones I got, the top and bottom cone-shaped plugs of the fabric screen in front seems to want to gradually work their way out of the holes they plug into - over time this means the top and lower parts of the screen starts to push out from the unit, though interestingly the plugs in the middle seem to stay without any issue. That's a bit frustrating, but not a dealbreaker (though I do think it might need to be re-engineered a bit). We probably have to push them back in once a week or so. See the attached picture for the effect. You'd never see it looking from the front fortunately.

The feet are hollow plastic which is probably fine for most areas, but on our wood floors they make it difficult to move the speakers without scratching the floor. A cheap rubber/foam base for the feet would be nice - but we've rigged one up ourselves.

We do love the sound though!

I got these speakers on Amazon for $254 a pair when they were on sale. Best value ever. I have had speakers that cost several times more - Yamaha NS 777 ($800), JBL L890 ($800), and KEF Q900 ($1600) and they sound only marginally better than the ES80.

At first I paired them with a Denon X1000 and it did not sound very good. Bass was weak and some frequencies sounded as if they were missing. Midrange was a little too strong and highs were somewhat unpleasant. Then I upgraded to a Yamaha 673 which made a huge difference. I turned off all processing/effects and selected Pure Direct mode (stereo, no subwoofer). They sounded clear and crisp. Bass is full-bodied yet without any boominess. Vocals are transparent and airy yet without any sibilance. I added a Yamaha SW315 subwoofer which further improved sound quality.

In fact, the sound quality is so close to the JBL L890 I suggest that if you are considering JBL L890, you should get the ES80 instead. Then use that extra money on a good SVS/Hsu sub. You won't be disappointed.
