Like any USB powered speakers these have several tradeoffs. One is that they are limited in power. JBL did a great job in tying the volume control to the useable and distortion-free portion of the power output, but they aren't going to fill a room - not really even a small one. Again, however, they also are not going to distort or clip and the sound is sufficiently clear all the way up to 100% on the volume control.
Another positive is that they don't have your typical AC-DC converter/transformer power plug dongle to take up space on your outlets. For that reason they are also very portable and ideal for laptops that don't have quality built-in speakers.
Right out of the box, they were very easy to set up. One speaker plugs into the second speaker, and the second speaker plugs into your computer via a USB cable. All of the cables are fitted to the equipment and neatly tuck up into the bottoms of each speaker. There is also an extra aux-in cable included if you don’t have an available USB port or for use with mobile devices.
The speakers are larger than I had envisioned, measuring about 6 inches across. But, they have a super sleek and attractive design so I didn’t mind this. But if you’re looking for something portable, these might be a little bit much.
But the sound is REMARKABLE! It’s like listening to a high quality stereo system. From music to webinar presentation to video clips, they simply don’t disappoint. I was so impressed with them that I ended up ordering a pair for myself.
I would highly recommend these for your computer, or for your home to link to your mobile devices.
Although in the picture the speaker are sitting in a up right, you can actually place it horizontally on your desk for the sound to travel though the your desk for a richer low end sound. The volume control is located on the right speaker as a spin dial which is easily reached and adjusted, and if the speaker is plugged in through usb it can directly change the sound on the computer (Mac).
the only thing I would take off points from this speaker are the cables are a bit too short, therefore the speaker are to sit relatively close to each other instead of setting to further apart, although it wasn't a issue for my particular setup it is something to consider.
The speakers are powered and communicate with the computer through USB and do not have a bluetooth option. They include an auxiliary port for connecting a phone or mp3 player, but do not come with an outlet to USB adapter so they still have to be connected to the computer, or use a third party adapter to use the auxiliary port.
