Grappling Hook Bill

We are extremely happy with this purchase. There are a lot of great audio brands that will get the job done, but many are above the price point of these. We use them mainly for home theater and music. These are replacing a 5.1 big box brand configuration from the '90s. We use them in a 2.1 configuration with a Polk sub that we owned prior. There is no competition between the old speakers and these. They do an awesome job in a small home theater. All of the voices that could not be heard before are now audible. I considered other brands SVS, Polk, Klipsch, but JBL is my brand of choice. We could not be happier. They are hard to beat for the price. The SVS was the brand that I considered most against these, but I have never auditioned them. The SVS price point is higher than these. Although I have no doubt they are fine speakers, price ultimately won out for us and the JBL sound.

Do yourself a favor if you do purchase these, put on your favorite movie or recording. You will be blown away by the detail. For instance, I watched Pirates of the Caribbean. The dialogue of that movie always sounded very subtle. There were of course several of those movies and we had difficulty watching them because the dialogue wasn't being picked up clearly. I can say that I actually enjoyed watching the movie now that I wasn't trying to discern what was being said. The best part was that even Johnny Depp's character began slurring his speech, the dialogue was discernible. Even voices off camera were picked up clear as day.

The JBLs are great musical speakers. They have to be played at a low volume in an apartment setting. We mainly listen to Jazz. They work very well for all genres, but they really make Jazz come alive. Listening to Joshua Redman's City Folk at the moment, even at low volume these are impeccable. The sax and pianos on that recording will make think you are listening live. The cymbal crashes are reproduced in there full spectrum.

Classical music is also great on these as well. We don't own a lot of classical, but we will be investing quite a bit in some. Great imaging on these! Thanks JBL and World Wide Stereo!

Better than the JBL Studio 530s if you don't have the JBL 550P sub

The guy who sent back the JBL Studio 530s and kept the JBL Studio 230s wasn't too far off. Granted, the Studio 530s are the most amazing speaker I've heard in double its price range. Pair it with the acoustic suspension 5-series sub, and you'll never want for a better sounding system. But there's the rub. The 530s need a sub, having smaller low freq drivers of the same design. In fact, the 230s deliver amazing LF with their 6.5-inch woofers. I have a pair of these running from a marantz pm8003 in the kitchen for my lovely better half, and she cooks better than before. All else equal, opt for the 530s and a sub setup. If no sub, then I'd choose these. I recently bought a pair of used B&W 686 S2 speakers and a-b-c'd them with the 530s and the 230s. For my crude ears they were all enjoyable. It's a 3-way toss up without a sub, For acoustic I'd go with the 530s. Rock and pop, probably the 230s, because of their low end pop--really clean and not boomy like a lot of bass reflex speakers.But the B&W's were better than the 230s on top and better than the 530s for lows. Consider that I paid over $650 for the B&Ws. Incidentally the 530s are amazing in a complete 5-series setup with sub driven from a marantz av/mm config. Marantz Av8003 and MM8003 make the JBL 5-series come alive.

Big sound in a small package. Don't overlook these!

I bought a pair to go with my all JBL series 2, 7.1 surround system. Currently I have the 280's as my front speakers, the 230s as my surround side speakers a 235C as my center channel, and I'm waiting on a pair of 210s which I plan to wall mount for rear surround.

Back to the 230, This is a lot of bang for the buck. In some ways its a shame these are my surrounds because I have a feeling these would do just fine for somebody, as a front pair. They share the same exact drivers as my other speakers that I purchased, (except for the 210s which have 4 inch low frequency drivers instead of the 6.5 all the others have. So the overall presence of the sound for HT are outstanding.

These studio 2 series speakers are a nice departure from earlier models in that they are not nearly as in your face as the much lauded speakers they made a couple of decades ago. Sure the construction isn't as good, as these are made in China. Don't be fooled though, these speakers are much more adept at playing all kinds of music and ht, and are not just a rock music speakers as the old classic models were known for. They sound incredibly well balanced. The overall timbre is quite mellow, they got the ability to bring out decent detail for the money just right. I can listen to these for hours and there is zero fatigue. These are just really solid bookshelf speakers with none of the shrillness you might find in slightly less expensive models. I think I'll keep these!

Excellent speakers. If you can get these on sale for $299 like I did they are a steal. Easily as good or better than the Monitor Audio Bronze 2, and IMO much better than the Polk RTiA3's they replaced in my setup. I auditioned the JBL's versus the Monitor Audio's at a friends house using identical associated equipment, the only change was the speakers. The two brands had slightly different sound signatures, but the JBL did better on bass. Mid-range and highs were crisp and detailed on both brands. After listening to the JBL's for a few months and comparing them to my Polk's the JBL's were miles ahead - clear winners. Polk's dynamics seemed slow, and Polk's detail was smeared in comparision. These could easily sell at $499 a pair and have the audio snob crowd genuflecting if they were a trendy brand or engineered by Andrew Jones (no knock on Jones who is a great designer). As it stands they are fantastic speaker - and again if you can watch for a sale price they are no-brainer bargain. Better than many bookshelf speakers priced much higher.
