Aesthetically, they are simple yet refined. The gloss black tops are a nice touch, as are the rounded corners. Personally, I think they look better with the grilles off but, to each their own. Sonically, they tend to be----dare I say...a little bright. This is not a negative trait however. They just tend to favor the higher frequencies a little more but they do not fatigue your ears by any means. The mid and lower frequencies are a delight and quite "welcoming" if that makes any sense. They can play very loud given the right amplifier. Don't try to push these with a budget receiver; it would be a real shame. The Denon at 130 watts/channel is plenty. I've turned them up as far as my ears can take it and i've yet to hear a shred of distortion or clipping. These are not obviously on the high end of the range for speakers but they are far from basic consumer grade. At a retail price of $1,200/pair, they sound, look, and feel as you'd expect them to. I grabbed them at just under $480 each so I feel I got a good deal and am very pleased with these. If you're thinking about going with these towers, do yourself a favor and get them while you can.
*Edit Starting to love these studio 290s. The pioneer Vsx Lx 301 blew up. Junk. Thank God it was under warranty. Sounds like the whole mother board. Not counting my chickens if it'll come back any better. So in the mean time I purchased a pioneer Vsx Lx 503. Pretty bomb receiver. At a grand it's an upper end piece of equipment. At least for me. Well it put these big studio 290s to work. Awesome. Problem is the Vsx Lx 503 sub out doesn't recognize my sub. Well I like my sub more than I like the price of this possibly defective tuner. The studio 290s are growing on me though.
Another great quality is the size and weight of this speaker. It weights about 55 pounds once out of the box and as previous reviewer suggested the pictures don't do it justice. The construction quality is very good quality and this speaker looks like $1200 speaker or more. Due to large size I think having dual 8inch drivers (woofers) makes this a true full range speaker. You really do get great high, mid and low.
As far as amplification it sounds great with Onkyo 9010 at 44watt per channel at 8ohm but seems to like more power. Hooked this baby up with older Onkyo M-501 power amp 150 watt per channel you get another 5-10% more sound. The extra juice seems to have slightly better control over all drivers inside the speaker. You get clearer voices, tighter bass and a more controlled interaction between high, mid and low's. If you have the means I highly recommend amp with over 100 watt per channel at 8ohm.
In conclusion, I love my JBL Studio 290. I was able to snatch them at $399 per speaker before it sold out (it may be back at that price, grab it).
JBL in my opinion is one of best if not best speaker manufacturers who test and manufacture quality. They have been in business for many years and have the experience and technical knowledge to manufacture solid performers at all price ranges. JBL Studio 290 are winners and I remain convinced they are best value for your money if you are looking for speaker with qualities specified above. Now there might be reasons why you may go with another speaker. Reasons such as brand loyalty or sound preference. Klipsch makes great speakers also but from experience they tend to be little bright *(ear piercing) which in my opinion makes JBL Studio 290 a more well rounded, smooth studio speaker.
