About JCD Collection
Jewelry-making has been a part of my life since I was a teenager. At 14 I learned to make sterling silver jewelry from my dad using stones collected and polished by my grandfather. While living in Switzerland in my 20s, I collected watch parts and circuit boards for pendant and earring designs. In 2013, I launched the JCD Collection with necklaces celebrating the design, not solely the function, of safety pins. I'm intrigued by wearable art, repurposing vintage jewelry, and using unexpected materials. Two of my favorite compliments have been: "I've never seen anything like this before" (gallery owner) and "Your necklaces are sculptures" (restaurateur). Creating artwork (www.janacharl.com) has been my lifelong passion. Soldering silver paved the way to welding steel. I believe art is beauty and intelligence. The JCD Collection is designed for women of all ages and cultures who have the common desire to express themselves. What we choose to wear is a reflection of who we are and strive to be.
Each piece of jewelry is slightly different because it is individually handmade and most designs are limited editions or one-of-a-kind. Along with new materials, I utilize vintage, repurposed and unexpected elements. I have a large inventory of materials that I have collected. I sketch, brainstorm, and often just start experimenting. I do not believe in traditional symmetry, but rather I seek to achieve a sense of balance. I add and rearrange until I am satisfied. Each piece is truly unique. I have patterns to roughly follow for the most popular pieces but tend to improve upon them as I go.
