JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer
A frustrating choice woodworkers often face is whether to get a jointer or a planer first. That choice is made more difficult because these machines compliment each other to dimension, square and smooth the wood. The new JET JJP- 12 Jointer-Planer eliminates that problem and brings both capabilities to your shop in one accurate, durable and economical package.
The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer is based on a heavy-duty, fully welded steel base cabinet that houses the motor along with the planer table mechanism. The cabinet also provides solid mounting for the associated controls as well as supporting the jointer table and fence assemblies.
The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer features a 3HP, 230V, 12.5A, 1Ph TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor that supplies consistent power to the cutterhead that issused for both jointing and planing operations as well as the feed roller system in the planer mode. The belts and feed roller drive chain systems are contained within the cabinet but readily accessible through the large removable panel on the cabinet rear.
To protect the motor – and you – we include a magnetic On/Off switch with a built-in limiter. This switch prevents excessive variances in the electrical power from damaging the motor.
Another benefit of a magnetic switch is that should the power go out and then come back on the JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer will not restart on its own. The On button must be pushed after power is restored to start the machine. The limit switch also prevents machine startup while changing modes of operation.
To make the JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer as capable as it is versatile, the jointing and planing width capacity is a full 12”. That capacity allows you to work with wider boards without having to rip them down to fit common jointer widths in the 6 to 8” range. Because both the jointer and planer width capacities are the same, you can move between those modes without having to add an additional ripping step to the process.
The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer uses a large 2 ¾”-diameter cutterhead fitted with three high quality knives for both jointing and planing operations. The cutterhead turns at 5500 RPM for all operations. The knives are retained with conventional wedge bars and have jacking screws that make setting their height precisely much easier. Because this cutterhead is used for both jointing and planing, setting the knives one time is all that is required.
- The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer brings two crucial woodworking processes, jointing and planing to the shop in one space and money saving package.
- The 3 HP motor and drives are contained in the cabinet but accessible through a removable rear panel.
From the beginning, along with accuracy, capacity and durability, developing a fast, easy way to change between jointing and planing modes was high on the design criteria list. The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer sports a very simple, tool-free hinge based system that allows changing between jointing and planing modes very quickly without having to remove any components.
A pair of locking levers on the cabinet sides release the jointing bed which is then rotated up to expose the planer section. Lifting the cast iron jointer bed assembly (moves as one piece) is made easier because of spring-assisted hinges that reduce that effort substantially. A drop in lock at the hinge point secures the jointer bed in the upright position.
The dust collection shroud with its 4”-diameter outlet port is also hinged for use in both the jointing and planing modes. The shroud has an internal, gravity-operated baffle plate that helps direct the collection vacuum for maximum effectiveness. When the jointer bed is up, the dust shroud is rotated up into a very traditional location for planer dust evacuation. The planer section is now ready for use.
To go back to the jointer mode, rotate the dust shroud down, release the jointer table lock, lower the table into position and then engage the two locking levers. The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer is ready for jointing operations in seconds.
Because both the machine modes use the same 12” cutterhead, the jointer section is capable of face jointing 12”-wide stock. The 55”-long by 12”-wide cast iron infeed and outfeed tables provide plenty of support for the big project pieces.
The infeed and outfeed cast iron tables are individually adjustable for height for the most flexibility. The maximum cut depth is 1/8”. To insure long-term accuracy, we even included full coplanar adjustment capability and complete instructions in the manual for making this adjustment should it become necessary. The 43”-long by 6”-tall extruded aluminum smooth faced fence makes accurate jointing easy.
The fence is fully adjustable for material width using a pair of wide spread levers for maximum stability. The fence face can be set to any angle from 0 to 45-degrees for precise bevel cuts. A handy bevel scale and pointer are included on the fence mount.
The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer is a fully capable thickness planer with a 12”-cut width and handles a whopping 8 ¾” maximum material thickness. The maximum full-width cut depth is 1/8” with 5/32” being the maximum cut on narrower stock. Naturally, lighter cuts put less stress on the wood itself and often produce much better results. The 5500 RPM cutterhead speed means a constant 20 FPM feed rate is a good balance between quick material removal and a clean, smooth surface.
In planer mode the material feed roller system is engaged by moving an exterior handle to the On position. That produces a material feed rate of 20 FPM. (feet per minute) The control lever is moved to the Off position when the JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer is changed to the jointing mode.
The cutterhead assembly is fixed and includes a row of gravity-operated anti-kickback fingers for safety. A serrated metal feed roller is designed to resist contamination and maintain a consistent material feed rate for the best results. A rubber-covered outfeed roller keeps the stock moving without marring the freshly planed surface. The 21 ¼” by 12” planer table adjusts up and down through a large handwheel (with spinner handle) on the infeed end of the JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer while in planer mode.
A scale on the handwheel hub shows the amount of change partial turns create while a full height scale with pointer shows overall cutter to table distance. The planer table is locked with a lever-type handle.
The JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer was designed to bring the much needed jointing and planing capabilities to your shop in a single, space-saving 55”-long by 39 ½”-tall (top of fence) and 32”-deep (fence at its widest setting) package. Because of its space saving design and our focus on accuracy, function and durability, the JET JJP-12 Jointer-Planer is as economical as it is versatile.
- The JET JJP-12 has a whopping 12” jointing width capacity! The fence and fully adjustable infeed and outfeed tables make this an extremely versatile machine.
- In the planer mode the JJP- 12 handles boards up to 12” wide with power to spare.

Custom built for smooth transition between functions, it ensures precise cuts with features including three high-quality knives, an adjustable outfeed table for supporting long work pieces, and large, ergonomic knobs for extra-fine adjustment control.
Any woodworker, whether building a backyard deck or a commercial structure, will appreciate the Jet JJP-12's all-in-one, precision-cut capability. This machine makes a no-tool switch from jointer to planer in just a few quick motions, allowing you the capabilities of both machines without compromising your work space.
Both functions offer a full 12-inch width capacity and 55-inch tables, so no extra ripping process is needed when you switch between modes. And, in addition to its compact bench-top design, a rugged steel stand is included for those times floor positioning is more convenient.
Easy-Handling Adjustments for Maximum Accuracy
The Jet JJP-12's oversized handwheel and knobs fit comfortably in your hand, allowing for extremely fine-tuned adjustments. The wide-spaced handles make it easy to stabilize stock to the heavy-duty, 43-by-6-inch fence. Particularly handy for complex projects, the fence stays in place between function changes and sets easily for bevel cuts up to 45 degrees.
Expert Materials Offer Enhanced Operation
The Jet JJP-12 runs on a heavy-duty 13 Amp motor, supplying the power you need for a variety of cutting applications. Its table top is precision-flattened to ensure a smooth, even cut. The tough, cast-iron infeed and outfeed tables adjust individually to give the work piece superior support. Cutting is performed with three top-quality knives, which are fitted to the high-speed steel cutter head.
The JJP-12 also includes a premium dust collection shroud, which rotates in both settings and has a standard four-inch outlet port, allowing for efficient dust collection that cuts your clean-up time to a minimum.
Top-Notch Features for Safe, Consistent Woodworking
During jointer operation, the bridge-style cutter guard's base-located adjustment knob allows wood to pass evenly beneath the guard, preventing you from pushing down directly over the cutter. The planer function's cutter head prevents kickback with gravity-operated fingers, while its metal infeed roller and rubber-coated outfeed roller maintain a consistent non-marring feed rate.
For both operation modes, security is a no-brainer, thanks to the self-engaging locks that fall into place when you make the switch between functions. For your additional safety, the magnetic on/off switch has a built-in limiter to prevent start-up after power outages and while you switch between modes.
The JJP-12 is backed by a five year warranty.
About JET: A History of Sharing New, Feature-Rich Products
Opened in 1958 after the founder of the company, Leslie P. Sussman, took the first Boeing Jet Airplane trip from Seattle, Washington to Japan, JET began as a small dealer that sold air hoists and trolleys out of a single hardware store in Seattle. Over the years, JET has carried everything from snowmobiles, transmitter radios, and forklifts to nylon stockings, but by the early 1970s, metalworking had become the base of their business line. And by the 1980s, JET had expanded into the realm of woodworking. Today, you'll find that JET offers a wide range of popular woodworking tools that are backed with best-in-class features and excellent service.

I've had this unit for 2 years now and my buyers remorse has increased greatly. JET initially replaced the locking pins, jointed fence, and guard arm free of charge under warranty because mine were damaged in shipping. Initially, this satisfied me and after getting everything aligned I began using the machine.
In use, the fence has enough play in it that squaring it at one point results in a 2 to 3 degree error at another. It's simply not flat or true. The aluminum fence also flexes when jointing thick or heavy stock. As another user stated I also wish it came farther forward to allow me to edge joint on the front end of the blades where they get the least wear. I do enjoy the smaller footprint of the machine, but the infeed and outfeed tables aren't long enough to joint anything longer than 6 ft reliably. When jointing an 8 ft board you really need two people and a lot of downward pressure to keep the wood from falling off the end of the machine. About the only thing I like about this machine is the 12 inch jointing capacity for shorter stock.
I used to have a Dewalt 735 planer. In fact I wish I still did. I have the straight knife JJP-12 and it only has 1 fixed feed rate of 20 fpm. I experience nasty tearout on the faces of even straight grained lumber. I mostly plane red oak and even with careful attention to grain direction and light passes the tearout is unavoidable. The Dewalt has two speeds and much finer results. Also, taking too light of a pass on the JET leaves teeth marks from the feed roller behind. Now, after two years of light use the feed rollers don't seem to be working properly either. I have to push or pull the wood to assist it through. I've already cleaned and checked the rollers, so my next step is to try and increase the feed roller tension and then call JET to see if their 5 year warranty is worth a hoot. If you consider buying this machine, think long and hard about getting the spiral cutter version for two reasons: the feed rate is 12 fpm instead of 20, and hopefully the spiral head will alleviate tearout. Just be warned jointing operations will still be hindered by the shorter wing tables anyways. For the cost of the spiral machine you'd be better off with a grizzly 12 inch jointed and a separate 15 inch planer.
I've received 3 of these machines so far and none of them have been satisfactory. I will update this review if JET support manages to resolve my issues.
I ordered a JJP-12 from Amazon on 9/8/2015. It arrived on 9/18/2015 and the LEFT table locking shaft was sheared off and broken. I contacted Amazon and they ordered a replacement unit.
The second JJP-12 was ordered on 9/18/2015. It arrived on 9/29/2015 and again the LEFT table locking shaft was sheared off and broken. I contacted Amazon again and they ordered another replacement unit.
The third JJP-12 was ordered on 9/29/2015. It arrived on 10/6/2015 and upon initial inspection both table locking shafts were intact. I signed for the order and removed the remainder of the sides of the crate for further inspection. When locking the jointer table down, the left side required very little resistance to lock down, and the right side took considerably more effort (roughly 10-15 lbs of force). After locking the right side of the jointer table down I heard a clunk and the table locking shaft had sheared off. I then opened the jointer and inspected both table locking shafts and discovered that not only had the right pin sheared off, but the left pin had been bent which is why it required very little force to lock down. After inspecting the rest of the machine thoroughly, the fence has a dent in it that won't allow boards to pass by it smoothly, there were several loose bolts in various places on the unit, and the fit and finish on the paint is quite lacking as well. There are also miscellaneous light scratches on various painted surfaces that were not in contact with the shipping crate at all. I'm mystefied as to how they were scratched, because the only time they could have been scratched was during assembly and crating. For $2,000+ I expect a product that arrives in NEW condition. I'm currently waiting JET support to call me back so I can decide whether to return this on to Amazon as well, or wait for replacement parts and just live with the poor quality of the paint/scratches on this unit. I still haven't even begun checking to see if the tables are coplaner, knives are aligned, and planar drive belt and functionality is all working. In fact, I'm scared to check for fear of further disappointment.
In my experience with each of these 3 machines thus far, the table locking shafts have a great amount of deflection (from 1/8" to 3/8") when the jointer top is locked down. All 3 machines exhibited this behavior and all 3 machines had defective pins that broke. This is either a design flaw or a defective locking pin, or worse yet: both.
For what it is worth, I would also like JET to know that the crate they ship the JJP-12 in is very sub par. It is by far the flimsiest crate I've ever received a shipment in. The internal crate supports that the sides and lid nail into are made of plywood and split readily allowing the crate to open at the seams or come apart prematurely. Also, the crate is raised off the ground by several skids (5 in total) to allow a forklift to pick it up. These skids are improperly spaced making it impossible to lift this crate up with a standard pallet jack. The shippers that deliver these items have nothing but a pallet jack to use when moving them, making it very difficult. I highly recommend using better materials for the crates, and altering the design to allow access for moving with pallet jacks. 2 of the 3 machines I received were stacked onto an additional pallet by the shipper for handling, which places the jointer (a top heavy machine) over 8" off the ground.
As of today 10/6/2015 I have spent almost an entire month trying to get a JJP-12 working in my workshop. I do woodworking as a hobby, but even still I feel my faith in JET has been greatly shaken by receiving 3 defective units that are priced over $2,000 each. I sincerely hope the quality issues are worked out and I can get a fully functional JJP-12 soon. I have put in a call to JET's support team and they asked for pictures and information. Apparently they have had several complaints about these table locking shafts breaking, and I suspect they may have a quality control issue with several of their components. For the time being, STAY AWAY.
Assembly was straight-forward - basically removing plastic wrap, cleaning the tables and adding the safety guard. You'll also have to provide a plug - not unusual for a 220+ volt machine. This thing is a heavyweight to move as well, tipping the scales at about 500lbs. Get a friend, preferably someone in shape, to help you handle this.
Couple small items of note - the bolt/set-screw for the planar table wheel was lying in the bottom of the crate. Very strange and I'm glad it was there because I hunted through the box of hardware and around the floor for a while looking for it. The other thing is the guard. Don't get me wrong, it functions very well. However, when you're edge-jointing you'll want to move the fence in and out occasionally to balance the wear on the knives. If you're jointing with the fence moved forward (toward the operator), the sliding guard obstructs the operators path when moving along the table - would be nice if this was a telescoping mechanism of some sort.
Amazon was, of course, Amazon - great delivery schedule, right on time. Delivered on the day I requested - driver brought it into my garage. I highly recommend this machine and I highly recommend purchasing from Amazon.
