A Decent Item at a good price

I wasn't certain what to expect, but this turned out to be a reasonable purchase. It took about a month to arrive (overseas shipping from Asia), but arrived in fine shape. It's hard to imagine how they make money doing this for six dollars!

Important Note #1: This device is not a universal USB adapter. It is just what it says: an OTG Adapter (stands for USB On The Go). Look it up on Wikipedia to find out what this means. It is basically a way to look at media files on a memory card or a USB device like a camera or MP3 player. That's about it! I tried the USB slot with a flash memory stick but could not get it to power up. I'd be interested in knowing if this works for anyone else?

I am using it with a rooted G-tab 10.1. I have only tested it with a micro-SD card so far, but I was able to view the contents and copy them using ASTRO file manager. I tried playing an MP3 file directly from the SD card, but that did not work (Java error). It may have been a problem with ASTRO though.

Important Note #2: This device has a very small switch on one side. It selects the USB connection or the multi-card interface. You have to use this switch to choose what you are connecting. If you leave it on USB you won't see the contents of your memory card. I have reasonably good eyesight, but didn't notice this switch (black on black) until I read another review.

I have to admit, I purchased this adapter because I was curious. How could Samsung sell something at retail for over $40 and their parts supplier sell it for only $2.05? Then I read some horrible review that made it sound cheap and flimsy, which made me more curious since Samsung is not known for cheap and flimsy.

The device arrived today and it is in a Samsung OEM parts envelope, made of the same materials as my Galaxy Tab, and of seemingly excellent quality. I say seemingly since absolutely NO DOCUMENTATION comes with it. Just the part alone in a zip lock envelope inside a 2" x 2" padded mailing envelope. So, I see a long evening ahead on line figuring out how this adapter will work.

But the mystery deepens! That 2" x 2" padded envelope weighed two ounces. And it was shipped air mail from Tung Chung Post Office in Hong Kong, to San Francisco for US Customs, and then on to Hawaii. Yes, it took several weeks, much longer than he usual Amazon delivery. However, the POSTAGE ALONE had to be the $2.05 they charged for the part!

I'm as confused as ever by those inscrutable Koreans. LOL!

This lil contraption is cheap! I bought one and after a little bit of time the usb stopped working, I tried flipping the switch back and forth and it broke..... Oh, in case you dont know in order to switch from usb to card reader you have to flip a switch on the side. So with that being said let me also say that I did stow it away in the pocket of my backpack laptop, tablet carrier thingy. So it did take a little abuse but nothing the average person wouldnt do, so for the price I am not disappointed but I am purchasing another to leave in the usb position and the original, well its locked in the card reader position. Another thing is that this is kind of big so its a little awkward, but it serves its purpose well enough for the price.

With this adapter and a keyboard you can hook up a mouse and have a mini laptop that will get the job done and is lighter to carry to and from school than a bigger 15 inch screen laptop. It makes navigating the internet a little easier than using just the touchscreen especially when you have to try and hit little buttons onscreen with big fingers.

THERE IS A SWITCH ON SIDE

I own a Samsung Galaxy 2 - 7 Android Tablet. I purchased this with little/no expectations other than it would take a while to get here via the "slow boat" (and US Customs) from Asia. When I first plugged it in: NADA - my nifty roll-up usb keyboard did not work. Then I went to the Amazon item listing (ready to rant) - but read the feedback first: it turns out that there is a small slide SWITCH you need to engage for your particular input device/media to work: when I switched it towards the plug end, my keyboard WORKED. I then plugged in an SD card from my camera and threw the switch towards the slot - alas,it did NOT work... so...: I took it out the OTG unit out and plugged it in again with the SD card inserted, and my file browser popped up on my Tab - apparently one needs to unplug/plug in order for the Tab to recognize the media.
I wonder how many of the folks who gave this horrible ratings bothered to read the feedback and questions/answers first? (It would have helped if the dealer threw in a small multilingual piece of paper pointing out the existence of the tiny, but all-important switch.)

Summary: Wasn't expensive and was worth a try. For me, it is actually working when the switch is in USB and a USB is in device BEFORE insertion.

UPDATE: I couldn't get it to work, but then no instructions were sent out. After reading another review, found the switch. Sequence of use: switch the switch to, say, USB and then install your USB item (thumbdrive, for instance.) Plug it in firmly but gently. It recognized my USB drive finally and I was able to transfer some files. I have NOT tried it with any memory cards because I seldome use them. But at least it DOES work with my Tab. NOTE: if you have a protective cover on your tab, it may interfere with the depth of insertion of the device. If you are having an issue of disconnecting or intermittency, check that first. Good Luck!
Three stars for lack of instructions with it.

.....Old review: Short and sweet: the Galaxy Tab sees it for an instant as "USB device plugged in" (with/without a USB drive on it) and immediately disconnects it...as if there is nothing there. My thumbdrive's light goes on for an instant, then winks out (when plugged in to the OTG. Yes, I tried various drives...all formatted to FAT32. All my drives work with my Pipo Smart S1. Methinks the Sanoxy is junk.

Cheap and useless waste of money

I had previously used the cable connection type for connecting USB drives and keyboards, but over time it got lost. I thought i would try this compact adapter instead. I tried connecting my memory stick to it and it kept losing the connection at the slightest waggle, that is once I had worked out that I needed to slide the switch on the side. There was not even a slip of paper with it to explain what the switch was for. I did manage to read an SD card with it but didn't try for long, as I mainly use memory sticks.

I contacted the vendor and said that the connection was unreliable but got the answer that they were all tested before dispatch. I explained that it worked sometimes, and they seemed to take this as evidence that the problem was not theirs. In fairness to them they did ask what i wanted to do, but what I really wanted was one that simply worked - every time, so could they send me another one. They told me all the adapters were the same and lost interest at that point. That was a month and half ago. The shipping was really slow first time round (approx 3 weeks!), coming from the Far East, and no replacement was ever received.

Do yourself a favour. It's cheap for a reason. Get a cable OTG adapter instead. It puts less strain on your tablet port. with this beast and the memory stick sticking out of the bottom, you're asking to wreck your port, leading to an expensive repair. Unless you really want to read SD cards with your tablet, in which case I'd recommend you find something better than this.

So glad I ordered one of these. It comes from China so you have to wait awhile for delivery. I did, I ordered in November didn't arrive till after christmas. but its worth the wait.
Its a solid piece of kit. strong not flimsy, takes SD cards, works well with my samsung galaxy NOTE 10.1 plugs in no problems.
Not much more I can say really, it fits and works great.
Just be patient for delivery.
