From AC/DC to Guns 'N Roses, the Offspring to Pink Floyd, the JF-02 Ultimate Drive pedal from JOYO nails the timeless tones of the Classic Rock era. The "OCD pedal," as it has become known, has two settings - High and Low - which allow for flexibility. The tone it creates is soothing and sweet when just a little bit of gain is dialed in. And then you start to lay into the pedal (either with another pedal up front or by turning up the drive and volume) and the Ultimate Drive really begins to shine! Arena rockers beware... you won't want to let anyone borrow this little monster. Designed with the goal of recreating the tone of a tube amplifier at volume, the OCD's distortion is somewhat of a hybrid when it comes to Solid State or Vacuum Tube tone. The real deal when it comes to aesthetics, sound and construction - Joyo's Ultimate Drive pedal features a metal shell-casing, quality connectors and sturdy controls, with bright-red plastic knobs! The JF-02 has been wired for true-bypass, has an LED on/off indicator light, and the second Hi/Low tone switch, besides the normal ON/OFF Stomp-box clicker-switch, is durable and functional. This pedal will provide years of service and will turn heads as the cutting midrange pierces through the crowd. Joyo's OCD or Ultimate Drive Distortion/Overdrive pedal comes with a 9V battery, so its ready for action right out of the box. Better still, it's available at an incredible price!

I set it up with OD at zero and level at 9. The boost certainly did an excellent job of pushing my amp into some thick overdrive. It doesn't take much from the OD knob to get the breakup you want. Using it past 6 or 7 would suit some, but it gets a little fuzzy for anything I'll need.
Pushing the level knob up to 9 did create some noise when the pedal was engaged, but it was less than I expected. Bringing it back down to 6 negated much of that anyway.
Pulling back on the level to 6 and increasing the OD to 3 seems like the right spot...for me. It gives me just enough boost and added overdrive to get the hard rock that I like. Of course, we all want something different, and your settings will be different.
But the pedal has a wide enough range in each knob that you should be able to get what you want. It's not a distortion pedal, but it does get pretty aggressive. Not sure how it will sound as a standalone gain tool for a solid state amp, but it certainly does an excellent job of driving tubes.
The paint job...that's my one dislike. Not that it matters to me all that much, but I think it can affect expectations of people considering it. It LOOKS like a heavy distortion pedal. But it's not.
As for hints...I've seen a review from three years ago where the switch wasn't activating, and the red light was staying on. I bought mine "used" through Amazon. When I got it, it was doing the same thing. Maybe it's the same pedal, but I doubt it. All that needed to be done was to tighten the nut on the switch. It was a little loose and was allowing the switch to sag into the pedal. Tightened it up and all was well.
As for other complaints about definition and clarity in chords...I can't speak for them, and they may have different ears than mine. For me, everything sounded very clear and defined. It's always possible that tweaking settings between the guitar, amp and pedal can make some difference there. It's also possible that this pedal is being compared to a considerably higher end option. I don't know other than to say that all situations are different.
Bottom line is that there seems to be widespread love for this pedal, and the price point is amazing. I'd take this easily over the Boss Super Overdrive, Bad Monkey, Screamin' Blues and many others in its price range. To be honest, for me personally and what I like to hear...ill take it over a TubeScreamer too.
The three EQ knobs seem to add quite a bit of boost (e.g., if you put the "Low" at 3:00 or more, you get a BIG boost at the bottom end). The same goes for Mid and High.
The pedal itself seems to be of decent quality - the knob pots are very smooth, the 1/4" in/out jacks seem tight and quiet, etc., but I haven't had it too long and I don't travel with it.
It's a great price and makes a huge range of sounds.
If you place this pedal in front of your amp . Please don't conplain that is noisey... Because you are basically purting a pre amp in front of another pre amp... That's just how it is. So I think that if you put this on the effects loop bypassing the amps pre amp... You will get the best results.... Now, they are a little subtle... This stompbox is best suited for people who are obssessed with getting the best tone possible, therefore you have to have a good ear and be patient and tweek the sound to perfection... If you think that you will get this out of the box and get the sound of the Vox AC 30 immediately ... I think it's an unrealistic expectation... But if you take the time to tweek both your amp and this pedal you wipl get an amazing smooth warm tone that will be noticeable by anyone and everyone who hears you playing.... Everytime I play out... People comment how good my guitar sounds... But it has to do more with this pedal than anythinf else... Absolute brilliant... Get it if you can! And you will not regret it... I read some hate saying that they are poorly constructed, or that they are not trie bypass, or that they suck b cause they are made in china and they are cheap... These people assume that and I think it even affects them in a subliminal level that this oedal cannot be that great if it's obly 30 dlls.... But in fact it's probably one of the best am simulators on the planet.... I also own the american sound , and brittish sound.... Both equally great... If this is the first joyo pedal you have checked out.... You really need to take a look at their ultimate overdrive.... It's ridiculously awesome.... Thanks ... And enjoy this mosnter tone machine
