This is a book for all those people who still believe that JFK was a Cold War hawk, thinking and acting just as the administration replacing him after his assassination. He refused to invade Laos, Cuba and Vietnam. He refused to allow the assassination of Diem. He refused to allow the assassination of Castro. He refused to provoke the Russians with tanks in Berlin at Check Point Charlie. He refused to give in to CIA blackmail and order air support in the Bay of Pigs. He refused to respond with military attack on Cuba and Soviet military installations in the Cuba missile crises. At several times he refused to launch a preemptive all out nuclear strike on USSR, China and the rest of the Communist block, saving humanity from certain extinction.

On the contrary, he tried to establish approachment with both Cuba and the Soviets through secret back channels while at the same time showing hardness and resolve, not to upset the hawks in his own administration. He launched a nation wide educational campaign seeking political mandate for a nuclear test ban treaty with USSR which he signed months before his assassination.

All this in opposition to his Joint Chiefs of Staff, the CIA and a majority of civilian hardliners in Congress and his own administration ... including his Vice President, Lyndon Baines Johnson.

Douglas Horne is 100% Right On: JFK fought the Warfare State and lost.

Douglas Horne provides some of the best information available on the JFK assassination. I saw him speak on the DVD's I bought from http://changehistjfk.blogspot.com/ . There he showed that President Kennedy's body was described differently at Parkland Hospital than it was at Bethesda, after it was taken from Parkland at gunpoint by Secret Service agents. At Parkland the tennis ball-sized wound in the back of the President's head was featured. At Bethesda Naval Hospital, President Kennedy's head was operated on the remove evidence of gunshots from the front. Then the autopsy was done, claiming only shots from the front.
In JFK's War, Douglas Horne clearly documents the drifting apart of President Kennedy from his military and related advisers. President Kennedy had always been concerned that attacking Cuba would invoke a Soviet attack on West Berlin, where we were weak. He shows the rift between President Kennedy becoming permanent after the Cuban Missal Crisis in 1962, when President Kennedy thanked his advisers for their victory. The missals had been removed from Cuba and a world war had been averted.
The advisers countered: We were had. We missed a great chance to invade Cuba and possibly win the Cold War. If you weren't chicken, we could still do it today. President Kennedy want to bring peace to the The Cold War. The Military and the CIA wanted to win it.
This book is somewhat like the book by James Douglas. Both are well-documented and easy to understand.

recognize it at all from what they learned in high school or even grad school history classes.

Horne has read it all and writes to the quick of the moment, when the permanent unelected bureaucracy, became the government instead of facilitating the decisions of elected officials. Because this book so clearly shows that our old model of power-- checks and balances and elections-- are so clearly outdated, this book is current event #1. For, how can we solve today's towering domestic and foreign policy problems if we are still kept on the hamster wheel of an outdated model of power?

That recognition is what comes through so clearly in Horne's remarkably concise summary of virtually all Cold War Scholarship that he supplements with his own interviews from his job with the Congressionaly-appointed Assassination Records Review Board.

The Coup of 1963 is when our government went Autopilot.

All current events are rendered mute and diversion, till that is recognized at the societal level. That's why THIS is the book you should send to newbies to this issue. This is the book that should be posted across the spectrum by those informed enough to recognize the opportunity cost of not doing so, given a topic as censored as this one.

Concise, Informative, Interesting

Concise, informative, well researched, Interesting. An excellent political history of events between 1960 to 1963 relating to Berlin, Laos, Vietnam, Cuban Missile Crisis and the heated difference in opinion between Jack Kennedy and the key CIA and military leaders. It is frightening to learn that a majority of our key leaders supported a full nuclear response to Berlin and Laos and "FRYING Cuba in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. JFK was the only person stopping these actions. It is unlikely we will ever know for sure if Kennedy's assassination was either a single shooter or one of the many conspiracy theories. But, this book offers a believable, well researched, alter-hypothesis for who orchestrated the death of JFK and why.

I don't often think of conspiracy theories because it is impossible to know what the truth is. But when I do think of JFK's assassination, I remember reading a few paragraphs in the introduction of Robert McNamara's book, "In Retrospect" that he had been with Kennedy when he learned of Diems death (November 1, 1963). Kennedy went into a rage. 21 days later Kennedy was himself dead. Seems like an odd coincidence. This book sets the backdrop for that rage. This book is very pro-Kennedy, but it also attempts to explains why many Cold War Hawks would consider it their patriotic duty to rid our country of a president that, in their opinion, was weak and placing the security of our country at risk.
