This story takes place across the pond. Twenty six year old "Fat Jimmy," is a hard drinking, hard living guy by day, and a mouthy comedienne at night. He so wants to be famous that it brings out the desperation in him. His best friend Lenny, also is following the same career path, but with a little less conviction.
The story was a little rough around the edges, but no story about a hard life trying to rise to the top wouldn't be. A fall out with a former friend, costs him some rungs on that ladder to fame and fortune. "Fat Jimmy" really isn't a very nice guy, or a good friend. His view of women is kind of ugly.
The more I read, the more I disliked him. Then it took a turn, and I started to like him a little more. There is some humor throughout that made me laugh. The underlying theme though is the true story. What would you do to move up? Human nature and all its ugly sides.
When "Fat Jimmy" gets a chance at a television show, it will either make or break him. Lots of little back stories concerning his family and where he came from. Maybe he will find someone to put him on the chosen path. How will it end? Will "Fat Jimmy" find his "Blind Ballerina?" Will he find fame and fortune? In the end I actually enjoyed the overall tale.
Some may ask why I said yes to read and review this book. And in short, the title got me. I’ve read a lot of books, and after a while the story line is always the same. No way was I going to come across a millionaire mogul and his mousey plain toy girl, with a title like that.
I’m well aware of the old saying, about judging books by their cover, but, hell, I was intrigued.
Was the book good?
There was a great story behind the title. There were lots of laughs, and lots of slang, that had this Aussie chick laughing out loud.
As the weather outside gets warmer and days get longer, do yourself a favor and pick up this gem........the perfect lazy Sunday read.
This was quite a crazy read. All of it narrated in a strong Scottish accent along with all the slang, which I didn’t always get and often had to look up. It’s almost like a memoir, sometimes flitting from a scene to a memory and then on to another scene. In fact, I really wasn’t sure I liked it at first, but it did grow on me.
Fat Jimmy is crude and rude, and you’re in his head the whole time. His unfiltered opinions are right there in your face, and they are often unkind, if not downright offensive. But, I will say this. This was one well-developed character. He felt real, and even with all his flaws, he was always wholeheartedly unrepentant.
In the end, I found I did like the story. I think folks who are looking for something humorous, but edgy, might dig it.
