Top customer reviews
I bought two sets as part of a robot vision project, but I first tried them out on my wife's iPhone 5, and they do indeed work well - better than the price would have you believe. Images are reasonably sharp, and for the sorts of things for which you'd be using an iPhone 5 as a camera, these work great, and the jump to the next tier of pricing/quality is pretty large. My recommendation? Buy this, and if it doesn't suit your needs, you're not out much money, but odds are that it will do all you'd care to do with your phone's camera anyway.
There are, contrary to other reviews, three lenses. The fisheye is the largest of the two apparent ones, and the macro/wide angle is the smaller. To get to the macro, you need to unscrew the end of the set - the lens combo looks sort of like a funnel, and you need to unscrew the entire "funnel" (cone-part) of the lens to get to the macro, which is purely the very short cylindrical bottom.
The phone "cap" - the thing that slides onto the iPhone 5 - is plastic, but decent quality. It seems unlikely to scratch anything. There is an embedded metal ring for each of the lenses (the fisheye and the macro/wide-angle) to screw into, which seems decently durable [UPDATE 01/2014: I just received two more for a project, and I don't see the metal rings anymore]. The lens caps fit fairly snugly, although it wouldn't shock me if they eventually became loose (they're just plastic).
This slides easily onto a "naked" iPhone 5 but not onto anything else I've got - the iPhone 4/4s is too thick, as is the Nexus 4. Unless you're planning on using the lenses by themselves, as I am, only buy this if you have an iPhone 5.
For the macro lens you have take out the outer lens. This wasn't specified in the instructions. I thought it was an attachment lens which you could unscrew but apparently it's not so don't waste your time trying to break open the wide angle lens to figure out how to use the macro lens.
It's okay to play with, but it's a toy it isn't going to give you great pictures.
Before I go these, I had the clip-on lens, and they work WAY better than this one. Good deal, but that piece of cheap a** plastic either gonna scratch your phone and leave marks all over the sides, front and back... or $$$ goes to the recycle bin.
