I have two of these mounted in a properly tuned and ported box being powered by a JX1000/1D monoblock. They’re fed by KnuKonceptz 0 gauge wire and protected by an 80 amp ANL fuse. I keep a backup in the glovebox in case it blows, but it hasn’t. I’ve done the big three upgrade on my suv to try to get the best power delivery possible. I installed sound deadening in all the doors and plan on doing the roof soon too-side note, these subs push so hard you can watch the roof of my suv ripple like there’s waves on it. Pretty cool.
I can’t vouch for any install other than my own, but I know that mine is just simply done right. My local car audio shop offered me a job when I showed them my install. It’s important to run the calculations, think about all possible problems, and just simply do it right the first time. It’s also important to note to actually read your manual. My amp’s $260, these subs at the time were $540 for the pair. You don’t want to blow things up.
Now.. these subs thump. Yes, I’ve gotten comments from the neighbors. I installed these back in high school and my mom used to tell me she knew when I was almost home because she could hear my subs when I was down the street. My coworkers gave me lots of flack because they’d hear me coming for 30 seconds before I pulled in (they’re an older crowd). At the high school football tailgates my truck was the tailgate vehicle, and still is at bonfires now. You can hear her hummin from a long ways away and you will get some dirty looks if you crank it up in town.
The sound quality is awesome. I have them tuned pretty high actually, and they handle it well. They’re set to roll off slowly somewhere around 120-160 Hz if I remember correctly, and my setup will really make your chest vibrate at the right frequencies. They excel at all music from old country to classic rock, heavy metal, new country, rap, and the weird electronic crap my girlfriend listens to. They are definitely loud enough to hurt your hearing. I’ve only turned them up to 30 out of 35, because I’d be worried about hurting my hearing and stereo.
The build quality is solid from what I remember. Again it’s been 3 years, but I know it took both my dad and I to put the box with subs and amp into my SUV. He used to do car audio installations and was amazed by the beefiness of them. I would highly recommend picking up a set of grills for your woofers. I keep a toolkit in the back and often have outdoors equipment right in front of the woofers. My grills are dented-better them than my expensive subs.
Would I recommend them? Absolutely, 150%.
Would I buy them again? Pretty sure I would. My next vehicle will probably be a pickup though, with low profiles under the seat. If I get another suv I’d consider W7s in a sealed box with a quick disconnect. Sealed only because I like punchiness and sealed boxes are better than ported for that, and twin W7s would rattle my brains out. W3s are fine, I just want that “mine are bigger” argument to use.
