Nice Small Stand For Landscape Use

I have been using the Joby GripTight GorillaPod stand for about two weeks now on a daily basis and it works quite well for me. I like that it grips the phone very firmly. I use it mostly to hold my iPhone 6 (which has a thin clear case protector) to watch Vimeo, YouTube, Netflix, and other live streaming broadcasts such as Periscope so I'm not constantly fidgeting with it. Hence, it also means that I'm using it mostly to hold my iPhone in landscape mode. However, you can just flip the stand itself from landscape to portrait mode table (this is how I watch Periscope). It just means that you'll be using two of the three legs (on the side) to support the device with the device itself placed on a flat surface in portrait mode. I found that it's not as easy to have my iPhone held in portrait mode on all three legs due to the weight of the device because there is just not enough counterbalance with the three short legs to hold it up (as in landscape mode). If your main platform is going to be a flat surface (table, counter, book, etc.) then this shouldn't be an issue - just use the flat surface to hold the phone, letting the device be the third leg itself. You can get the phone to "hang" nicely in portrait mode using a tree limb, railing, or something similar (as shown in their photo ad) to wrap the Joby legs around. As for the size, I was initially surprised by how small it was although I didn't really have any set expectations but I got used to the size and I actually like it now because it makes it more portable for me. The stand comes in two main pieces (see pictures) with the top portion detached and attachable to the leg by slide mechanism which can be locked or unlocked to the legs, a nice feature. The plastic and rubber legs do grip well around the metal railings I used and won't slide down, but the screw piece which attaches to the top section is not very good. I think it might be better if this were one solid piece somehow. However, I think this is so that you can put the grip on an actual tripod (I didn't need this feature). For me, the screw wants to spin due to the weight of the device when I have it suspended in the air on my railings and I've tried rotating it different ways to get it to "almost' work but I don't feel comfortable with it and it usually ends up swiveling anyways. Also, I didn't want to over-tighten the screw lest I bust or crack the base (perhaps this is unfounded) so I rarely use the stand to hold my phone in a portrait mode as they show in the picture. I do use portrait mode often but with the device firmly planted on the counter. I was not concerned about authenticity because I purchased this directly from Amazon as seller and fulfiller. Overall, I do like the stand because it is quite adjustable and versatile. It has been very useful for my particular need so I would recommend it. I would give it 4.4/5.0. -06/08/2015

Generally sturdy but with a few faults

My first impression of this GripTight GorillaPod is that's really small, with the total height (including the head) being roughly 6.5". The tripod is extremely light and felt a bit on the cheap side since the legs are made of plastic; but the joints on the individual sections have a decent amount of tension. The top of the tripod features a small quick release mount where you can attach the GripTight mount or most any other smaller smartphone mount for that matter. Just underneath the quick release mount is a ring which you turn to lock the quick release so that you don't accidentally press the button to release the mount. One thing to mention is that after locking everything in place, there is a small amount of play at the quick release mount which may cause noticeable movement if you're doing videos, long exposures, or time-lapses.

If you have an iPhone 6 Plus and/or a Reti-Cam mount, they do work on this. I purchased the regular sized mount (not the XL) and if you angle the phone you can get it to fit. I was also able to mount my phone with a very slim (0.4mm) case. In either case, they were an extremely tight fit. I would recommend the XL version if you don't have another mount. If you have the Reti-Cam, rest assured, the GripTight supports the weight of the Reti-Cam mount and iPhone 6 Plus (with slim case). Overall, it seems sturdy enough while gripped onto something until you get to extreme angles, at which point the top quick release joint may tend to sag slightly. If you use it on level ground, it's best to make sure you extend the legs since it can feel top-heavy.

Overall, my only complaints are that I wish the top had an actual screw-down lock for the ballhead instead of the round joints since I feel like it'll eventually wear down and become loose. Also, the top quick release mount does show movement when everything is locked down and I would have liked a bit more quality at such an important joint. But honestly, for around $15 it's quite a decent product to have for on-the-go stabilization which is easy to carry around.

Having tried out a number of cheap gorilla-pod style smartphone tripods that kept breaking, I finally decided to spend the money on the real deal. The build quality is excellent and sets this tripod apart from the rest. It feels durable and you can tell that it's been built to last. The legs are easy to manipulate and offer a huge degree of flexibility in terms of positioning. The smartphone grip is smooth to open but offers sufficient grip for most smartphones - only very heavy phones won't be supported here. The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars for me is because the tripod is quite small, the legs are not quite as tall as i'd like them to be. If this isn't a problem for you then what you're paying for is a high-quality, reliable tripod.

Fine if you want something to hold your phone in a moment of inspiration. terrible if you want to do anything video related.

The GorillaPod legs allow for standing or wrapping around a multitude of surfaces, however, one slight breeze and you will get camera wobble,

The small adaptor is at its limits with the Nexus 5X and it has to sit well off centre as not to interfere with the volume rocker which is on the same side as the power button, occasionally causing the tripod to become un-balanced. I have also found that the adaptor is incredibly flimsy and dont expect it to last much more than a few uses, however, with it having a screw mount, i should be able to repurpose the tripod for other uses. i would probably recommend buying something a little more stable, like the Manfroto mini pod and phone adaptor.

as there is technically nothing wrong with it, it does exactly what they claim, it hold my phone, and its got wiggly legs. I cant give it a 1 out of 5. but i dont like it, and i wouldnt recommend paying full price.

Ok, hands up, I bought one of those cheap copies on eBay for about £3. After a couple of uses it went floppy (story of my life) and didn't really grip anything.
I looked long and hard at these genuine ones, thinking can they really be that much better to be worth so much more money?
Well I've got one now, and from the first time I picked it up it was clear this product is in a different league to the copy.
It's much more steady (I won't use the word stiff) and the lockable base plate is useful.
I decided to get the grip tight phone holder too and this is also a good solid bit of kit which has had some serious design thought put into it.
I'm glad I spent the money. The cheap copy is now in a charity shop.

What a tripod!

I have had a genuine interest in photography for a number of years, having possessed and worked with a large number of DSLR cameras over the years. It quite scary how close the quality of phone cameras has come.
I bought this simply to have incase I ever needed it.
I cannot believe how much I have used the Joby smartphone grip tight. My phone is quickly starting to replace all of my existing cameras. This tripod part of the reason.

The tripod stands at about 10 inches tall, including phone, at its highest point (while still being stable). it can go as low as 1 inch with the legs spread.

Like all Joby gorrilapods the tripod is of an exceptional quality. Easy to use, manipulate and adjust. It keeps its form under pressure well and even my iPhone 6 with heavy case was not an issue. - including wind resistance.

The smartphone grip, while perfectly able to handle nearly any phone (perhaps new 5 inch plus phones) was slightly flimsy at the edge of its extendibility. While I never feared for my phones safety it does make me wonder about the grips longevity. - The upside of the tripod is the addition of a standard 1/4 inch tripod screw so the head is interchangeable.
There are definitely better third party smart phone heads out there.
There may not be any better tripods at the moment

For amature picture takers, who just want to take nice, clear, stable and crisp picture this is the item to buy. I have found myself taking pitcures in impossible places as the grips hold the phone so well. I have looked at other tripods like this and the bracket that holds the phone just does not seem safE, but this one doesn't matter if the phone is up right, side ways or upside down, i have every confidance that this tripod will hold it safe and sound.

Almost anything can be used as a place to stand this tripod, i have hung it of fence posts, trees, bicycle handle bars, computer monitors as a make shift web cam, backs of chairs, curtain rails so on and so on.

If you dont and to use your phone on the tripod you can remove the braket and use a normal camera.

You can buy this from other shops, but you will pay more, Amazon is the place to go.

I recomend this to anyone who wishes to just have some fun on the go with their phone camera.

Combine this with a bluetooth remote controller for your phone's camera and it is a great buy.
