The product arrived in one plain box without any instructions. On the actual unit it shows a logo of "HWA/WYS UltraFire". It is much smaller than my other LED flashlights using 3xAAA or 2xAA cells. See my uploaded picture for size comparison.
The flashlight has three modes, controlled by its power button.
- When you first turn it on, it starts in High power (brightest) mode
- If you turn it off and then on again, it goes into Low power mode
- If you turn it off/on again, the light blinks rapidly in Strobe mode
Alternatively, you can tap the power button lightly while the light is on. It will then cycle through Low/Strobe/High modes
One problem with this design is that, suppose you turned off the flashlight while it was in Dim mode, wait a few minutes then turn it on again: It now starts in Strobe mode!
Another problem: In Low power mode it makes a faint high-pitch tone. This is because dimming is achieved by chopping the input current at 1.6kHz.
There are some confusing specs about this flashlight. At the beginning of description page it says "Using CREE XM-L Q5 lamps, Max brightness 450LM", but later it says "Output Luminous Flux: 300 lumens". My observations suggest both numbers are highly inflated.
By itself the light from this UltraFire flashlight looks decent, but nowhere near '300 lumens' as advertised. When compared side-by-side with my Maglite Mini Pro SP2P03H (rated 226 lumens), the MagLite blows this UltraFire flashlight completely away. See my uploaded picture and you can tell there is just no comparison. The only good point with the UltraFire is that it can provide a much wider beam at close range.
The focusing is done by moving the lens in front of LED (instead of the reflector behind). Problem with this design is that: as the lens is moved farther away from the LED, it collects less light generated by the LED. Therefore although you can make the area of the bright spot 10x smaller, its brightness does not go up 10x.
The flashlight is powered by one AA battery. You can use either alkaline, NiMH or NiZn battery. As can be seen from the "Power Consumption vs. Battery Voltage" chart I uploaded:
- When powered by one NiMH cell (1.2V), the flashlight consumes 1 Watt of power. This means the LED's total luminosity is closer to 100 lumens (because the light efficacy of CREE XM-L Q5 is around 100 lumens per watt).
- When powered by a higher voltage NiZn cell (1.65V), the input power is 2W. That means the luminosity is 200 lumens at best.
It should be noted from the chart that the LED flashlight can operate all the way down to ~0.3V. So it is very efficient in squeezing the last drop of juice from your alkaline batteries. In contrast, most cheaply made LED flashlights use 3x AAA batteries to drive the LED directly. That's why they become useless when the battery voltage drops close below 1V per cell.
I hesitate to use a 14500 3.7V rechargeable lithium-ion cell in this flashlight. The higher battery voltage could cause the LED’s current to grow out of control and burn out. On the other hand, since the flashlight does not cut off until battery voltage drops below 0.3V, the Li-ion battery will be permanently damaged if I let it drain all the way down.
The UltraFire LED flashlight failed to deliver '300 lumens' as advertised. However, it works reasonably well as a 50-100 lumens flashlight when powered by just one AA cell. Given its low cost and very efficient use of battery energy, I still consider it an acceptable product, hence the 3-star rating.
[Update on May 11, 2016]
I have verified that this flashlight does work with 14500 Lithium-ion rechargeable battery without burning out. As can be seen in my updated "Power consumption vs. Battery voltage" chart, the flashlight consumes around 4 watts when battery voltage is around 3.5V. This seems like a more reasonable power level for a '300 lumens' LED flashlight. So I upgraded my product rating to 4-star.

This is a very bright flashlight when using a 14500 battery. It maxes out my phone's light sensor at way over 211880 lux when using a 3.7 v 14500 battery. I like that it supports both AA and 14500. Used with an alkaline AA, it's not quite a bright, but still very decent. I also tried it with a rechargeable NiMH AA battery and was able to get a good level of light also.
The flashlight is pretty well constructed, but not quite as precisely machined as an Intsun of an almost identical design. I would have rated this flashlight 5 stars considering what you get for the very low price, but because it's missing an O ring in front of the lens, it's not water resistant. Water can leak between the lens and the lens screw cap and get into the flashlight. My Intsun flashlight, which is nearly identical in every way, included O rings on all openings, so it's truly water resistant. I will add my own O ring to fix this issue.
Note that, as is true for all of these kinds of small super bright flashlights that run from a single AA or 14500 battery, battery life is very limited at full brightness. Fortunately there's a low power mode to help extend battery life. However, I wish there were 3 power levels, instead of 2. We get 2 power levels and 1 strobe mode. I find the strobe mode pretty useless, and could use a 3rd super low power mode more than a strobe mode.
The light is suitable for making your way in the dark. A full push of the button turns the light on at the max setting. A half push will access the two other modes low and strobe. If you turn off the light then turn it back on it will reset back to max power mode. The battery compartment is designed to fir a 14500 battery so a AA battery has a lot of space to move around. if you tap hard on the flashlight you can move the battery around but when I was just holding the flashlight or walking around with it I did not notice the battery shifting. For the ability of switch between battery types I'm OK with the sloppy AA fit.
The construction feels light and cheap but since they are actually very cheap that's not a disappointment for me. These lights are going into my emergency bag hopefully to never be used so I am not too concerned about them being super durable. I was surprised I got two flashlights I thought it was a typo for the price I paid, its definitely a good value.
The faux tactical front of the light feels harsh, if you keep the light in your pocket it might rip a hole and at this price point its pretty pointless, I could have done without it.
