Top Customer Reviews
My main concerns were:
a) quality and construction - this information came mainly from (poor) customer reviews which covered shoddy construction such as: poor epoxy sealing, water leakage, short longevity (burning out). The only negative for JW was the high cost.
b) does it require an H4 to H13 adapter? JW has a direct H13 adapter.
c) Does it need a CANBUS or some other electronic in-line device to cure the infamous "flickering" that LEDs exhibit due to feedback on late model Jeeps? JW integrates anti-flicker technology, working directly with Chrysler/Jeep.
d) Where is it made? I prefer to buy products made in the USA. JW is make in the USA.
e) Is it DOT approved , which is a minimum requirement? There are many choices of LED lights, but far less that are truly DOT certified. VA has a pretty strict yearly inspection, and you can be failed for not having DOT lights. If you are pulled over by the police for having your headlights "blinding" and there is no DOT insignia on your lights, you can be ticketed. JW is DOT, SAE approved.
There are very good side-by-side videos comparing many different brands represented here on Amazon. This will make your work a lot easier, as they also demonstrate the actual light output on roads, so you can see brightness, beam patterns, peripheral throw, etc.
At the end of the day, I purchased the 8700 Evolution J. It was, as far as I am concerned, the superior choice. Installation was truly plug-and-play out of the box. There is zero LED flicker. I drove to the local car shop and they used a Headlight Alignment Machine to properly align the headlights, which was so easy, they didn't even charge me (one screw for vertical adjustment, no horizontal adjustments are possible or needed). I drove at night for 30 minutes, and nobody flashed me. I could see far better than with any other vehicle I've owned. Expensive? Agreed. If you truly can't save up the money to pay extra, by all means consider the lesser expensive choices (Raxiom LED is a good alternative) and do your homework on the pluses and minuses.
I've had the lights for a few weeks now. I leave for work early in the morning way before sunrise. Most definitely the whitest, brightest lights I've had on ANY car/SUV/truck There is a broad horizontal sweep of light that illuminates the entire road. I continue to be extremely impressed at the sharp, low "cutoff" of light that prevents the light from blinding oncoming traffic, so be very exacting on adjusting the lights. I may also add that Jeep Wranglers do not have a Horizontal adjustment as they are VOR and should not need any adjustment.
Beam pattern is crisp and well defined, as well as consistent across both headlights. High-beam performance is totally bonkers bright.
The throw distance down a strait road is ridiculous compared to stock. You can pick out signs reflecting back at you half mile away. No, seriously.
Interesting observation I have made is that while I aimed these very carefully I was worried about oncoming traffic even on low beam getting blinded by these lights. While I set them at the same beam height as stock on the garage door, they are super crisp with their upper edge cutoff and because of this, in 2 months driving not a single person has flashed me oncoming. - COOL!
Note: that I have now driven in heavy snowfall with these and this was a bit of a challenge. Two things to consider:
1. These produce no significant heat at the glass outer lens - as such, they will accumulate snow ( not melt it ) and thus be eventually blocked - you will need to stop and clean them off occasionally when they start looking dim. Yah. Not sure what to do about that just yet.
2. The color temperature is REALLY white and the light output is very high. As such, the reflectivity back at you from snow does cause a kind of white-out in your field of view that can be disorienting if you aren't prepared for it. Low beam helps, but still, you get a lot of light reflected back at you. I found myself experimenting with turning off the headlights and running with just the JW Speaker fog-lights I also installed. That's doable, but obviously not street legal.
To remedy this, I bought and installed a separate set of RUN-D Amber driving lights. Those cut right through snow and heavy rain with minimal reflectivity back to my eyes. If the need arises, I would turn off headlights and run the ambers in heavy snow.
That said, since my other 3 season driving won't see snow much these are an incredible upgrade over stock. On high-beam on back roads these headlights are very confidence inspiring as you can see well ahead of you as well as into the corners and ditches perfectly. For off-road these are also great to see way down the trail.
I subtracted 1 star because frankly in my opinion, these are pretty expensive. I do believe these are probably the best I could buy, but I considered these a true luxury item at this price point. I firmly feel that the manufacturer's margin of profit is set a bit steep for the value they are providing here.
If you got the cash - I recommend them. If you are on a budget - there are other options that are also very good. I would certainly respect a modest decrease in price on these and I'd be willing to bet they would sell even more of them. Keep in mind that for 2017, Jeep Wrangler switched to LED headlamps stock, so perhaps that will inspire JW Speaker to come down a few bucks for these. I sure like this brand and product quality though!
Hope that helps Peeps. These rock.
